However, it was not always this bad. Max Allegri’s reign as the head coach of Milan started in 2010, when he replaced Leonardo. PracticallyAi??
unknown back then, Allegri had the backing of the Milan hierarchy and most importantly, that of Galliani when he arrived from Cagliari. In his very first transfer window, Allegri managed to acquire the likes of Kevin Prince Boateng, Antonio Cassano, Robinho and Mark van Bommel. However, the most important transfer coup that season was the acquisition of Zlatan Ibrahimovic from Barcelona. The impact of that transfer is felt to this day. Not in favor of making big changes, Allegri played it very safe in his first season at Milan, where he rarely gave the youngsters a chance to make their mark. Experienced players were preferred on almost every occasion, as Allegri took his first steps in one of the biggest clubs in the world.
Favoring a attacking formation of 4-3-1-2 or rarely a 4-1-2-1-2 or a 4-3-3, Allegri gave an attacking dimension to Milan’s play, one which saw them score 65 goals that season, as compared to 60 in the previous season under Leonardo – a rise of a little more than 8%, a marginal improvement on that front but a huge improvement defensively. From 37 goals conceded under Leonardo, Allegri’s Milan gave away only 24 in his first season – a staggering drop of 35%.
Such changes made Milan the Italian champions that season, and also gave Allegri his very first Scudetto, that too in his very first season. Milan claimed the title with a goalless draw against Roma away from home and finally celebrated in front of their home fans with a 4-1 victory over Cagliari. With Pato, Ibrahimovic, Cassano and Robinho scoring at will, Milan were on the rise once more, years after their Champions League triumph under Ancelotti in 2007.
Milan also claimed the Supercoppa Italiana that year, by defeating their fierce rivals, Internazionale at the Beijing National Stadium. From being an also-ran to being the defending champions, Milan had to live up to their billing in Allegri’s second season in charge. However, this particular season would in fact turn out to be the most frustrating one. In one of the most shocking moves in recent years, Milan decided not to renew Pirlo’s contract and he was immediately snapped up by Juventus for free. Allegri favored his defensive midfielder to be more of a wall instead of a play-maker and due to this, he fielded Van Bommel more than Pirlo. An extra defensive shield was encouraged while a deep-lying play-maker was shunted to the sidelines. However, that move did in fact bear fruit as the results would suggest; but letting go a player like Pirlo for free, that too to their Scudetto rivals was a downright suicidal move.
Juventus signed Pirlo even without batting an eyelid and Conte made him the most important player in their line-up and even built his side around his play-making abilities. Milan’s loss was Juventus’ gain and it was proved at the end of that season when Juventus pipped Milan to the title with only a game to go. Throughout that season, Milan, and Allegri were plagued by injuries to key players at crucial junctures. Case in point – Thiago Silva against Roma. When Silva’s inflammation resurfaced in that match, instead of taking precautionary measures and substituting him, Allegri decided to keep him on and minutes later, the player hobbled off with an (aggravated) injury. That injury, like many others, took the wind out of Milan’s sail on more than one occasion that season. Even though Milan ran strongly, they were not able to finish on top in Serie A. Although they scored many more goals than the previous season, they also leaked in as many as 33. Elsewhere, they lost to Juventus in the Coppa Italia and went out in the knockout phase of the Champions League to Barcelona. Allegri’s second season ended without any silverware but with lots of promise for the future.
Tragedy struck Milan next season, as for the second successive transfer window, they parted with not one, but two of their best players. Thiago Silva, long thought to be the next in line to Maldini and Nesta, left Milan shores to join the nouveau riche PSG. Soon after that, it was learnt that Ibrahimovic too will be moving to PSG. Within a matter of days, sentences like ‘I’ll never leave Milan‘ became ‘I’ll always love Milan/Milan will always have a special place in my heart‘. At a time when Milan had bid farewell to players such as Gattuso, Nesta, Seedorf and Inzaghi, this dual transfer to PSG shook them to the core. All these drama, and the season was yet to start.
Parting with their best players have been a norm for Milan in the past (Shevchenko, Kaka, et al.) and Allegri was faced with an extremely difficult job of making something out of this squad. His only consolation was the acquisition of Pazzini from Internazionale and De Jong from Manchester City. Milan started their season horribly and by the time the first half of Serie A was over, they were in danger of missing out on European football. Their only hope seemed to rest on the very young shoulders of Stephan El Shaarawy, who at times played the role of left-back, left midfield and forward in the same match. El Shaarawy’s goals in the first half of that season made Milan believe that they can win something that year and come the January transfer window, they were gifted with the signature of Mario Balotelli – a self-proclaimed Milan fan, right from his Internazionale days.
