There are, broadly speaking, three types of Tottenham Hotspur supporter: the pessimist; the dreamer; and the one who straddles the middle ground. The pessimist appraises the French defenderai??i??s perilous injury situation with a weary resignation: ai???Ah, it was always destined to end this wayai??? they seem to say. The tragic plight of Ledley King is evoked and thoughts of ai???What could have beenai??? abound.
The dreamer brushes aside the very real concerns over the Frenchmanai??i??s future at the club and is enchanted by the partnership Younes Kaboul and Jan Vertonghen might one day forge. Payback for the non realisation of a Campbell-King pairing at the centre of defence is long overdue and a karmic redress is the very least the club is owed.
The third type of supporter views matters more dispassionately. The matter at hand is adjudged in holistic terms and due diligence is carried out with the precision of a legal eagle. It is this approach that ought to influence the thinking of stakeholders involved in determining whether or not Kaboul is worth persevering with beyond the expiration of his current contract.
At the risk of sounding trite and opting for the facile, we have been here before and the precedent is Ledley Kingai??i??s. Kingai??i??s recently released autobiography, ai???King: My Autobiographyai???, chronicles his painstaking travails against knee and muscular troubles that simply would not leave him at peace. His condition was chronic and could only be managed not cured. Whilst the autobiography largely succumbs to tedium and torpor, the reader is given valuable insight into the precarious world of an athlete beset by injuries of the like that now confront Younes Kaboul.
King lets the reader in on a daily struggle against an existential threat. Towards the middle and end of his career, his knee was so irrevocably damaged, so defeated, that he had to work in isolation: not on the lush, green training pitches his teammates cavorted about on, but in the unsympathetic, dreary confines of the clubai??i??s outdated gym and a pool belonging to a nearby fitness club. It was the conflict between the shackled self and the easy camaraderie shared by his peers that hurt King most acutely. Isolation can do terrible things to oneai??i??s mind particularly when juxtaposed with an environment that is centred on the collective. Thoughts inevitably turn to former glories and it is nostalgia of this type that ushers in the beginning of the end.
Kaboul recently spoke of his relief at having a fellow casualty, Sandro, as a training partner and his words drip with the desolation of working away from the group: ai???I was happy because I was not aloneai???. The injured pair ai???shared a lotai??? and with this the emotional agonies associated with serious injury are laid bare.
The symmetry between Kaboul and his former mentor do not end there. Like King, Kaboul is suffering from muscular complaints that are typical of players with such conditions. The knee itself while sore and frequently painful can be controlled; the stresses it places on other parts of the body are less easily confined. To this eye, he is only ever a stretch, or heavy contact or sprint away from breaking down once more. There is nothing more dispiriting to oneai??i??s emotions as a lover of the game than to see an athlete of godly physical proportions suffer at the hands of an enemy so ignoble that it strikes in the shadows, often at the precise moment you would least want it to. It is for the more medically qualified than I to determine the extent of this dark affair but I will venture that matters do not look promising, especially when factoring in the defenderai??i??s contractual situation.
As it stands, Kaboul will be a free agent from 30/06/14. Quite simply, an institution headed by the commercially astute powerhouse that is Daniel Levy would not have allowed his contract to run down without good reason. The logical conclusion must be that the club have grave concerns over his ability to fend off injury and perform at a level that it demands. The chairman has always been quick to renew the contracts of players he deems worthy of such reward and his non negotiation thus far is a biting indictment to those hopeful of a renaissance.
It would be remiss, not to mention mean-spirited, to write nothing of Kaboulai??i??s hard work and determination to rebuild his career. As well as following a regimented rehabilitation programme which includes gym work, swimming and running, he has gone above and beyond what was asked of him and taken on ai???extra workai??? by training daily at home. This footballerai??i??s workday is a lot longer than the 10am-12pm most of his colleagues are accustomed to. His burning desire to convalesce was most exemplified by his decision to cut his summer break two weeks short and work with a fitness trainer in Holland. He has put in the hard yards; a lot rests on lady luck.
Whether Younes Kaboul is a man raging against the embers of a dying light, a man in the final throes of a career that promised so much, will become a lot clearer over the upcoming months. A final decision on his future ought to be made with the best interests of the club in mind. To accommodate a man with a terminal condition will impede progress and lead to stasis and uncertainty: centre-back pairings will regularly be broken up upon his return/absence; the club may needlessly delay the acquisition of a high class replacement; and the injured party might in time come to symbolise a peculiar kind of negativity, an image of the clubai??i??s failings.
If the prognosis suggests, on the balance of probabilities, that his injury can be overcome, his talent dictates that he must be given a longer rope. But it is the scientific mind, and the scientific mind alone, that must be given free rein to determine what happens next.
