Kaboul, Gallas, Vertonghen and Caulker were ahead of him at the pecking order at the start of the season. Only an injury blow to Kaboul and Dawson’s determination to fight for his place presented him with a chance to stake claims for the starting spot at Tottenham. Earlier in the season, William Gallas was the automatic choice in defence. A player who is certainly past his prime and not a favourite among the fans.
