There arenai??i??t too many public quarrels featuring former England captain Rio Ferdinand where heai??i??s relegated to playing a supporting role. But thatai??i??s precisely the case, when Rio waded into a major public bust-up between Premier League boss Richard Scudamore and his counterpart at the FA, Chairman Greg Dyke.
Rio Ferdinand, fresh off a 1-0 loss to a rejuvenated Liverpool side, came out firmly on the side of Dyke. Rio being Rio, he injected a lot more venom into the proceedings calling the Manchester City v Newcastle game a ai???disgraceai??i??. His reason? Only 3 Englishmen featured in the starting line-ups for both teams. Not per team, mind you ai??i?? but, in total.
That is a shambles any way you cut it.
Rio & The Turkey Model
Rio Ferdinand, raised a few valid points that Greg Dyke would have approved of. Between new regulations limiting the number of players imported from abroad, and adopting the ai???Turkeyai??i?? model (explained below), Rio insists something needs to be done.Ai?? While regulations pertaining to the number of ai???domesticai??? players are already in force, and strengthening them might be open to discussion, the ai???Turkeyai??i?? model takes things a lot further.
In Turkey, as mandated by law, every club can only have a maximum of 10 foreign players on its roster. It gets worse on game day. Turkish clubs ai??i?? Galatasaray et al ai??i?? can put out only 6 foreign players in a match squad of a strength of 18. But short of Rio making the long walk up to Brussels, and getting the European Union to amend their laws on foreign worker quotas, thereai??i??s little chance England will see fit to undertake such a dramatic measure.
Greg Dyke must be patting himself on the back for having sparked a debate, one that will likely rage on for a couple of weeks ai??i?? an eternity in football terms. Today, the English presence in The Premier League has dwindled to a measly 32%. Dyke takes that to mean a poorer access to quality, than in previous years.
Quantity vs. Quality
But quantity and quality are two very different beasts. Another way of looking at the Premier Leagueai??i??s dismal English player statistics, is that the clubs are doing the winnowing of talent themselves ai??i?? a task that might otherwise have fallen on the shoulders of Roy Hodgson and his successors. If every Premier League club is a rational actor, intent on putting out its best players, then the English players who do eventually make it to the squad are effectively worthy of a shot at the national team.
Oxlade-Chamberlain raises an interesting point, though. The pressure on newly promoted clubs, or those that sit on the fence between relegation and promotion, to raise their standards to those of their new rivals gives them little room to maneuver. The ensuing risk-aversion that is built into each managerai??i??s approach ensures a marked preference for established talent.
What Oxlade-Chamberlain fails to mention is that thereai??i??s an entire industry built on scouting players of talent. It takes a willing suspension of disbelief to buy into the notion that managers would rather half way around the world to identify a young star, when thereai??i??s one in their own backyard.
If thatai??i??s not evidence enough, thereai??i??s enough opportunities for young English talent to make an impression during training when they get to rub shoulders with some of the best in the business. It was this opportunity to interact with foreign talent that sparked Franceai??i??s triumphant run in the World Cup of 1998. If the French could, over the years running up to the tournament, absorb the best from the best in foreign lands, surely England with its far superior domestic league offers a better opportunity for willing students.
Protectionist Moves Would Be Suicidal
A move to limit foreigners in the Premier League smacks of protectionism: and just like its economic counterpart, it does nothing to ensure the long-term competitiveness if its constituents. Raised in a bubble, where theyai??i??re guaranteed of a starting spot, merely by virtue of being English, young domestic talent will soon find themselves falling short of international standards.
But most importantly, if the Premier League begins to look inwards, as Greg Dyke suggests it should ai??i?? it runs the risk of shooting itself in its prized right foot. The Premier League is the worldai??i??s best loved sporting league because of the international flavor it brings to our TV screens every day. Tuning into watch a Liverpool versus Newcastle game, then, isnai??i??t so much a proposition about two English clubs facing off against each other.
Itai??i??s effectively an ai???internationalai??? contest with something at stake, for everyone in every corner of the world. Kudos to Richard Scudamore for not Anglicizing Englandai??i??s greatest export.
