Manchester United defender Phil Jones has drawn comparison with a number of legends, but it is perhaps time for him to live up to those expectations. We take a look at the Phil Jones Conundrum.
Sir Alex is a lot of things, but straight-talking isnai??i??t one of them; the Scot has always indulged in the hyperbole. Be it the claim that van Persie escaped a near death experience at the Liberty or this little gem after a good Phil Jones performance as United captured their record breaking 20th league crown:

At 21 years of age, he is going to be a phenomenal player. He can play anywhere on the pitch. He has such a massive influence, with his instinct and reading of the game. He has a drive about him.”
For sure, Jones is a good player in the making, but surely not even his most ardent fan would agree to such towering evaluation of the playerai??i??s credentials. Never mind Fergie, Steve Kean the former Blackburn boss and the man who played a pivotal role in harnessing Jonesai??i?? talent seems to reckon Phil could go on to lead his country. United legend Paddy Crerand reckoned Sir Bobby Charlton had likened Jones to perhaps Unitedai??i??s greatest player ever- Duncan Edwards. When one listens to such luminaries of the game waxing-lyrical over Jonesai??i?? untold potential, well it feels there should be more to come from the youngster. A lot more!
Phil Jones signed for United as a 19 year old defender for a mammoth A?16.5m transfer fee; United staved off the challenges of Liverpool and Arsenal to capture the teenagerai??i??s signature. He was expected to be gradually introduced to the first team but the Red Devils faced a gigantic injury crisis and Jones got an early taste of life as a Man United player. The Lancashire man took to the big stage like the proverbial duck to water and earned rave reviews with some memorable early season performances that made fans and critics sit up and take notice. Jones excelled as a marauding full-back and a ball playing center-back as he went on characteristic lung bursting runs from defense.Ai?? He was a joy to behold and United fans were swayed by his energy and effervescence. Although, there were some question marks regarding his defensive discipline but his exuberance made up for it, at times.
A Jack Of All Positions, But A Master Of .. ?
Questions were being asked and debates ragged – where should this kid with a bottomless pit of talent play on the pitch, to maximize his talents? Central Midfield looked a good shout, while the Right Back position too gave him an option and freedom to express himself. But those were the days when Jones could do no wrong; he was at times walking on water.
Two years hence and similar questions are being asked but the excitement seems to have mellowed down. Jones has turned into Unitedai??i??s new John Oai??i??Shea – the proverbial jack of all trades. The similarities with the former United defender are uncanny, Oai??i??Shea was a revelation in his first season, nut-megging Luis Figo and even made Rio Ferdinand ai??i?? the record signing at that time – sit out a few games.Ai?? But Oai??i??Shea never reached the dizzying heights that were once expected of him, although the Republic of Ireland international had a fine career at the Theater of Dreams. But Jones needs to break out of the utility man mode for his own good. The Englishman must try and cement his place at his preferred position i.e. Central Defense.
To be fair to Jones, he has never had a sustained run at the center- back spot with the twin towers Rio and Vida still going strong. Also, Jonny Evans has come up leaps and bounds and at the moment looks most likely to take over from Rio in the long run.Ai?? At Right Back, Rafael Da Silva is undoubtedly head and shoulders above everyone and is the nailed on choice if and when fit. In central midfield, Jones has probably the least chance, owing to his limited attributes in the passing department. During the season gone by, Jones was invariably asked to shield the defense in tough games by partnering Carrick in midfield; the signing of Felaini would perhaps negate that need as well.
Ergo, Jones will have to carve out a niche for himself and as many pundits and experts believed, it will have to be as a center-back. Competition is as intense as ever with five outstanding candidates vying for two slots but the duo of Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic arenai??i??t getting any younger and the youngsters like Jones and Smalling must start pushing for the starting spot.
Even though the Rio-Vidic partnership is still safe and sound, their lack of pace is a strain on the entire team dynamics. With them at the back, United side canai??i??t field a high defensive line and hence the midfield has to sit deep and this creates a disconnect with the forwards. Also, with Evra and Rafael bombing forward at every opportunity, Man United are vulnerable to quick counter attacks if the opposition can play the ball out wide and draw one of the two central defenders out of position. Ferdinand & Vidic are seasoned campaigners and their experience has given them the edge, but perhaps the time is nigh for the likes of Jones to grab their place.
Phil Jones had a few appearances last season at the heart of defense and looked to have overcome his fragilities.Ai?? Jones looked more assured and balanced than ever before as he gave a glimpse of what he could offer. David Moyes at the moment looks set to continue with experience at the back and no one can blame him for that. However, Phil Jones as Right Back at the moment doesnai??i??t offer much going forward and with Rafael set to make his comeback, the Englishman will most probably have to make do with a spot on the bench.
Itai??i??s going to be a long and hard season, and Jones is sure to get his chances at Center Back during the course of the journey. Phil Jones needs to be ready and prepared to grab his moment. As Roy Keane famously said ai???fail to prepare, prepare to failai???; Jones canai??i??t afford to let the opportunity go begging.
