With only eight matches played so far, Manchester United are already eight points behind the league leaders Arsenal. While it might be still be too early to press the panic button, but David Moyes knows that his side needs to start performing soon if they are to harbour any hopes of retaining their Premier League titles. The most worrying factor for Moyes at the moment is Unitedai??i??s home form – they have won just one out of the four matches played at Old Trafford so far this season as they were held to a draw by Southampton.
The home side started brightly in this game and Robin van Persie gave them the lead in the 26th minute with a composed finish. The chance was created by a wonderful pass from Adnan Januzaj to set up Wayne Rooney, who shot was saved by Boruc. The rebound fell to the Dutch international and he slotted it home. United were comfortable for rest of the first half and Moyes musty have felt confident about a win going into the break.
But Southampton fought back well in the second half and Mauricio Pochettinoai??i??s men showed why everyone has started to take them seriously this season. The away side dominated possession at Old Trafford and also managed more shots on target than Manchester United. Question marks were also raised about David Moyesai??i?? substitutions as he brought on Giggs and Welbeck. The Saints grabbed finally grabbed their equaliser as Adam Lallana scored from a corner right at the end. It was a deserved draw for Southampton, who are now on a five match unbeaten run in the league.
While questions have been raised about how the fear factor that Manchester United had departed with Sir Alex Ferguson, David Moyes said that it is the players who need to perform on the pitch rather than the managers.
“The fear comes from the team on the pitch.
“Obviously Sir Alex Ferguson has a great history and his experience will always work in charge of any team.
“But the players have always been the people that have to turn out and do it.” ai??i?? The Manchester United manager said.
Moyes also felt that his side should have put the game beyond doubts when they dominated it and rued the miss opportunities.
“We should probably have put the game to bed earlier. We had a couple of chances, hit the bar and had a couple of other opportunities.
“We had some pockets of play when we were very good and there were times when we were not as good. It was a mixed game at times, but we still had those chances that I was hoping we would finish off.”
“Overall though, I thought Jonny Evans and Phil Jones played really well at the back so I wouldn’t blame them for the goal. We are looking for that consistency but we are struggling to find it at the moment.” ai??i?? Moyes added.
But David Moyes was once again pleased with the performance of Adnan Januzaj and was delighted with the fact that he has finally put pen to a long term contract.
“We have been trying to get him signed for quite a few months, not just in my time.
“He’s an exceptionally talented player and one we are happy to have.
“It was a great pass for the goal.
“I’ve said it a couple of times, but he’s been worthy of his place.
“He has not looked out of place in the team. He has created goals and been part of of some of our best passing movements.
“He’s a very talented player and we will try to use him at the right times and make sure we get the best out of him.” ai??i?? Moyes told the press.
