One should not assume that just because an owner states he will not sell, that he cannot be convinced otherwise by a large enough bid. All one can really say for sure based on Henry’s statement is that:
(a) he wants to make it clear that Suarez, being under contract, does not have the final say on whether he stays or goes, and
(b) he wants to shut the door on any approaches from Arsenal.
There is still a real chance that if any another club comes along with a monumental bid for the Uruguayan, he may yet be able to exit Liverpool FC within this window.
While the offered sum may not seem like a lot, especially compared to Real Madridai??i??s A?85M bid for Gareth Bale, it is a fair bid for a somewhat controversial player with a tendency to get banned for large stretches of a season. So why have Liverpool been so vehemently turning down the possibility of this move, as if it would mean the end of the world? With a player so hell bent on an exit, are Liverpool really willing to have the player sulk around the dressing room after he has so openly declared his wish to leave? Quite simply put, Arsenal is the last club Liverpool should be selling to. If anything, it will be a worse move than when Arsenal sold Robin Van Persie to Manchester United. Why? Because in the current footballing landscape, the financial might of the two Manchester clubs and Chelsea FC have made the odds of them not finishing in the top 3 nearly a surety. This leaves Arsenal, Liverpool and Tottenham to fight for the 4th Champions League spot. Perhaps Wenger had the same thought when he was selling RVP, that with Arsenal unlikely to compete for the top spot, shipping the Dutch striker wasnai??i??t exactly like selling to a direct rival.
Selling Suarez to Arsenal will immensely reduce the chances of a top-four finish. Different camps will have differing opinions on which of the three clubs (Arsenal, Liverpool & Spurs) have the strongest squad. But the difference in the calibre of their respective line-ups is in reality very small. To get an unbiased look at where the three stand, we shall look at the WhoScored ratings of the best players of each team. For a like-for-like comparison, the highest rated players in each part of the field have been picked.
Only in midfield does Arsenalai??i??s current line-up have an edge over the other two, while Spurs are better off with respect to their defensive players. A Suarez-led Liverpool attack fare better than the Bale-powered Spurs, both of them scoring much higher than Arsenal.
The difference between the calibre of the respective players is very minute. So much so that the movement of players like Suarez and Bale will be enough to severely impact the balance. If Bale leaves Spurs as rumoured, and Arsenal successfully nab Suarez, they willAi?? edge ahead in the forward department. With Cazorla and Arteta feeding balls to Suarez, Arsenal will be tough to surpass for the other two clubs.
There is no like-for-like replacement
One more reason why Liverpool canai??i??t afford to lose Suarez to Arsenal (this has been mentioned in John W Henry’s statement as well) is because there is no way for the team to replace him in this window. All the world-class attackers who were likely to move in this window have either already made a jump (Cavani, Falcao, Gomez, Jovertic et al) or are known to be staying put (like Lewandowski). The only likely exception is Wayne Rooney, and we all know the odds of that happening. An alternate strategy could have been to bring in multiple players to replace the various attributes of the Uruguayan (goals, assists, dribbles etc.), but that will require the club to move for key players early in the season, so that the new forward line gets a chance to play together in pre-season. The chances of successfully doing that so this late in the transfer window, when most clubs have wrapped up their transfer business are too faint.
