If you took to Twitter on Sunday afternoon from around 4.00pm onwards, you would have seen varying degrees of criticism of three Spurs players ai??i?? Scott Parker, Jake Livermore and Jermain Defoe. The term criticism is used loosely as the 140 characters veered from astute comment to unnecessary diatribe, especially that starting within minutes of the match.
If a player wears the Lilywhite shirt then shouldnai??i??t fans’ support be guaranteed? However, that support does not have to be unquestioned. Whilst we should support them on the pitch, want them to do well, perhaps in order to convince us that our preconceptions are wrong, should we be blind to limitations of those players? The mentioned trio are a case in point.
Against Liverpool, the team felt imbalanced. Whilst so much of the focus this season has understandably been of Gareth Bale, Sundayai??i??s match showed just how much of an influence Aaron Lennon and Sandro have been and how much they are missed when unavailable. The formation on Sunday saw Mousa DembelAi?? start wide right with Jake Livermore come into the centre alongside Scott Parker. DembelAi?? is not a natural wide player and the selection to some extent, compromised both Spurs’ width and central midfield. Yet, despite Brendan Rodgers’ protestations that the win showed Liverpoolai??i??s strength, Liverpool won because of individual mistakes by Spurs players. After an opening 25 minutes where Liverpool caused problems, Spurs controlled the match again showing the form and resolve seen during the unbeaten run.
So why the questioning of the trio if Spurs played well? Perhaps this is a question of fine lines. Spurs were in control but failed to kill the game off. Spurs have a plan and ambition to challenge at the top of the Premier League, to dine with Europe’s finest. Whilst the trio can perform against the lower ranked teams in the Premier League, can they do the same against top teams? Can you picture Spurs beating the Bayernai??i??s, Milanai??i??s, the Realai??i??s of European football with Parker, Livermore and Defoe on the team? Is there a future for them at Spurs once this season is finished?
Arguably, coach AndrAi?? Villas-Boas has tailored his system and tactics to fit the players he has at his disposal. At the start of the season, 4-2-3-1 was probably not the expected formation but instead the 4-3-3 that has been prevalent through much of his management career. However, the loss of Modric and failure to sign Moutinho has meant that in the main, two deep lying midfielders has been the norm. The partnership of DembelAi?? and Sandro has seemed a natural successor to the Modric/Parker axis of last year. However, has any sense of relief at Parker being available with Sandroai??i??s season ending injury dissipated?
Parker and DembelAi?? do not seem to be able to gel. The Belgian is seen as the creative half of the pairing but is being forced to sit deeper than ideal by the Englishmanai??i??s continued forays forward. This is not Parkerai??i??s strength. Running with the ball requires guile, balance and a purpose to the end pass. More often than not, Parkerai??i??s bursts forward are of a bulldozing athletic ability into blind alleys. This can often lead to Parker beingAi??dispossessedAi??and he has a relatively high turnover rate. There is also a slowness in the pass, which gives the opposition time to organize and press. DembelAi?? has the strength and guile to overcome this, Parker perhaps doesnai??i??t. One of Spurs strengths last season was Parker sitting in front of the back four, harrying the opposition, winning the ball and playing the simple pass to the creative players. The dynamic has changed since his return from injury and the Englishman needs to return to what he does best for Spurs to have better balanced centre midfield.
Last season saw Livermore push through and become a regular in the first team squad. Yet this season that promise has been sharply curtailed. As more of a defensive midfielder, Livermore has fallen behind Sandro, Parker and Huddlestone in the pecking order. However, does Livermore fall into that jack of all trades master of none hole? Not good enough to claim a starting place as either a defensive or a creative midfielder but reasonable at both. For a coach who looks to versatility in players, is ‘reasonable’ good enough anymore? Taking his statistics into consideration, Livermore may not challenge the other central midfielders in either role. Livermore is a decent player, but is he good enough for Spurs ambitions?
Is Defoe a conundrum? At the start of the season Defoe appeared to take full advantage of Adebayorai??i??s absence, relishing the responsibility and trust placed on him by his coach. The Englishman was scoring goals, leading the line as a lone forward with perhaps more ability than was expected from him. Yet, his form has tailed off, there has been injury and Defoe hasnai??i??t scored in the league since Boxing Day. Are the old habits returning? Against Liverpool the striker seemed a peripheral figure. Defoe managed only 24 touches and unfortunately one of those was straight to Suarez and led to the penalty. Defoe is a striker in the ai???traditionalai??? sense. When he is on fire he can win matches, however when he is not, there maybe questions over his contribution to the team. For all his faults, Adebayor can link the play and create space for teammates in a way that the Englishman doesnai??i??t.
Players have been brought in that are versatile; good in a variety of positions to give a fluidity and flexibility as the coach needs. Sigurdsson, Dempsey and Holtby can play across the midfield attacking three; Holtby also as a central midfielder. DembelAi?? ai??i?? nominally an attacking midfielder has shone in the deeper central role and proved to be defensively strong. Vertonghen has excelled at centre-back, left-back and in bringing the ball out of defense. Even Lloris has shown himself to be a sweeper keeper. Fine lines, this is all about fine lines. Parker, Livermore and Defoe are good players but are they consistently good enough [or versatile enough] to match Spurs plans and ambitions going forward? Perhaps the next 15 matches will answer that question and determine their Spurs future.
