Dortmund’s victory over Eintracht Braunschweig was neither fast nor furious, but it may mark BVB’s return to the concentration, strength and resilience that took them to the summit a year ago.
In the first two weeks of the new season, Borussia Dortmund has witnessed two dream debuts. The first, a hat trick by new signing Pierre-Emerick Aubemayang against Augsburg earned uproarious applause, instant adoration by the Dortmund faithful, and a flurry of fawning press that declared Mario GAi??tzeai??i??s traumatic departure old news. The second, the Bundesliga scoring debut of youngster Jonas Hofmann against Eintracht Braunschweig this past week was not quite so rapturous, but marks just as significant, if more grounded, progress in the Dortmund camp.
Itai??i??s far too early to be making any predictions about the title race (though BVBai??i??s place at the top of the table is heartening), but the way Dortmund slugged out the tough win against Braunschweig showed promise for the season at large. Dortmund finished last season 25 points adrift of Bayern Munich, but never lost to them in the league. How the Schwarzgelben found themselves so far off the title was not by losing to their direct competitors, but by not beating teams that finished far below them. The Champions League campaign also played a role in distracting the players and causing them to lose energy and focus as they struggled to find a balance between their domestic and European ambitions. Scorelines such as a 4-1 loss to Hamburg in February, as well as several low-scoring stalemates against the likes of Fortuna DA?sseldorf and VfB Stuttgart, were evidence of a frustrating domestic campaign lacking in focus.
For about 65 minutes on Sunday, it looked as if Dortmundai??i??s game was again headed that way. Newly promoted Braunschweig never took their foot off the pedal from kickoff, challenging every Dortmund pass, defending well, and going close to glory a few times themselves. Dennis Kruppke almost managed to shock the stadium of 81,000 with his fourth minute shot on goal. Dortmund, despite its glut of creative players in hat-trick hero Aubemayang, highly anticipated debutante Henrik Mkhitaryan and top scorer Robert Lewandowski, simply seemed short of ideas.
This all changed in the 60th minute when Klopp sent on Marco Reus, rested after his midweek exertions for the national team. The speedy star made an immediate impression, sparking a flurry of attack and even scoring a lovely goal that was ruled offside. But it was the second substitution, Hofmann for Aubemayang, that proved the clinical tactical choice. The 21-year-old scored on practically his first touch, exchanging slick passes with defender Mats Hummels before cleverly sliding the ball past the Braunschweig keeper and several defenders, off the bottom of the far post and into the back of the net. Ten minutes later, he earned a penalty for his side, which was coolly converted by Reus, to send Dortmund to the top of the table despite a late goal by Kevin Kratz.
Far from being a classic, this Braunschweig match showed that Dortmund has the resilience, focus, and championship mentality Klopp hopes will help his young team push Bayern for the title. As they showed in the German Supercup, Dortmund can beat Bayern on any given day, but the league is won over 34 games. In the long haul, the ability to bear down and fight through to a scrappy victory is just as important as the moments of sheer footballing beauty and brilliance Kloppai??i??s team is so capable of producing. Before Aubemayang opened his account in Augsburg, the game was also tough, as Augsburg played physically and refused to let Dortmund settle into their usual rhythm. Braunschweig was much the same, and for more than one half it looked like Dortmund might succumb to these tactics, but they finally showed on both occasions that they have the stamina, grit, and resilience to grind out such difficult, crucial wins.
As the season goes on, some of this burden will fall on the shoulders of young players like Hofmann, Marvin Ducksch and Erik Durm, who add depth and hunger to the squad. Hofmann has so far earned two penalties and scored a goal of his own in only about thirty minutes of playing time, showing with his every touch how proud he was to be playing as the perfect impact substitute. The kindergarten, as Klopp so affectionately calls his team, just got even younger. The depth in squad will help BVB keep grinding out the domestic wins even with the distractions of the Champions League and the DFB-Pokal.
