‘Premier League Compass’ is a semi-regular column on TheHardTackle that throws a magnifying glass over clubs other than the (made up) ‘super six’. In this edition, the compass points in the direction of Wales where an intruder (of sorts) is ruffling the feathers of English sides.
Widely tipped to go right back down when they were promoted to the top flight, Swansea City have defied the laws that dictate a struggle for newly promoted sides.Ai??TheAi??’Swanselona’ of Wales, are somewhat like rebels in the English game, which is known for its directness and physical nature and where ‘getting stuck in’ is given as much (if not more)Ai??weightage as technical ability.
At an aptly named Liberty Stadium, Swansea are free birds challenging the tyranny of much greater opposition on their own terms. Brendan Rodgers has brainwashed his players to such an extent that they can no longer survive without carving neat triangles around the opposition. The club has an identity now, and one which they pride themselves upon. To Rodgers’s players, passing is a drug and they are hooked on.
Barcelona, for example, have a unique identity associated with the club; perhaps, something that will keep them above Real Madrid in terms of admiration and success for years to come. There is only one way they know how to play.
Of course, comparing the Welsh side to the great Barcelona is absurd, but Swansea have now embedded a culture into the club that is not too dissimilar. Since a young age, Rodgers has traveled all over Europe, such as Spain and Netherlands, to absorb knowledge, which perhaps explains why his team stands separate from the rest today.
The boldness of Swansea’s approach is something that must be admired, praised and in fact, hailed for years to come. Yes, they won’t be the first club to embrace top flight football with such emphatic success, but their manner would be a first. Stoke City possess a unique approach that isn’t one for the purists. Bolton, under Sam Allardyce, established themselves as a Premier League club through direct and physical football.
Others like Birmingham City were defensive, Fulham were compact and Blackburn relied on individual brilliance and grit. Wigan, on the other hand, have been barely hanging onto their top-flight status since Martinez tried to make them play a more beautiful brand of football.
Swansea produce some fascinating numbers that explain, to quite an extent, why they have been such a successful side this season and how a signing or two could vastly improve their numbers.
Brendan Rodgers’s men have kept an astonishing 56.8% possession, only bettered by Arsenal and Manchester City. Unsurprisingly, the Welsh team is the second most fouled team (11.6 per game ) with opponents aiming to break their rhythm.
Swansea’s possession play also enables them to concede the least number of fouls (8.3 per game) among all Premier League clubs. With greater possession, you reduce your chances of tiring early, conceding fouls and picking up bookings. Swansea is the most disciplined side picking up the least number of yellow cards (35), although they have picked up two red cards as well.

Swansea play an average of 487 short passes per game, again only bettered by Arsenal and Manchester City. The accuracy of their passing (85.2%) is the second highest in the league, with midfielder Leon Britton one of only five players in the league this season to end a game with 100% pass completion.
The Welsh side, though, produce only 11.5 shots per game, a little drawback of overplaying in the final third. They alsoAi??concede a pretty high 16 shots per game, which can beAi??can be explained by the amount of time Swansea spend in different areas of the pitch. The Welsh side spend 31% in their own third and 47% in the middle of the park as they look to gradually build-up attacks from the back.
However, here is where Michel Vorm’s signing has been a revelation for Brendan Rodgers. The goalkeeper has produced the second highest number of saves in the league, indicating that Swansea do leave themselves open at the back in a bid to play expansive football. But he has saved a very high 77% of the shots, which is highest among top 5 goalkeepers with the most number of saves.
To prove Swansea’s willingness to pass the ball out of defence, look no further than central defender Ashley Williams. Williams has attempted the highest number of passes for the club this season and is also the third highest in the league.
Brendan Rodgers’s team has claimed some significant scalps in its first season in the top flight. They have hardly been seen floundering, often going toe-to-toe with bigger clubs at their own game.
The 3-2 win over Arsenal at the Liberty Stadium was the greatest example of their ethos. Swansea’s possession stat read 55% and passing stats showed they made over 100 more passes, thereby sending Wenger’s men into a completely unfamiliar territory of having to chase the ball more often than not. They repeated the same figures during the 1-0 defeat of then league leaders Manchester City.
Although Swansea lie in mid-table, a few extra dimensions to their game can lift the side even further up in the future. Stoke City exposed a terrible need for the Welsh side to mix it up in attack. At the Britannia, the away side had a massive 74% of possession and played nearly thrice the number of passes Stoke could achieve, but were undone by two set-pieces.
Since Rodgers relies so heavily on passing from the back and through midfield, he is unlikely to do away with one of his three central midfielders in order to play two strikers. Danny Graham has done an incredible job on his own upfront, assisted by the wingers.
Rodgers needs an attacking midfielder with an eye for goal to propel his side to further success. On-loan Hoffenheim midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson has filled that need in emphatic fashion, having scored 5 and assisted twice in only 8 appearances thus far, but whether he’ll be a Swan next season remains to be seen.
“For me it is quite logical. It doesnai??i??t matter how big or small you are, if you donai??i??t have the ball you canai??i??t score.ai??? The manager’s quoteAi??captures the essence of his philosophy. It is a logic understood by all in world football, but only a few men have the capability of applying it.
Although Rodgers has signed a three-and-a-half-year deal in February, he will be chased by bigger clubs. Owen Coyle got Burnley playing majestic football in the top flight, but has paid the price for ditching them.Ai??Surely, the Swansea manager won’t make the same mistake?
In a little less than two seasons, Rodgers has transformed Swansea from a Championship side into a feared mid-table Premier League club.Ai??Nobody wants to play against Swansea anymore. It isn’t a fair game. They are just too greedy with the ball.
