A lot has been said and written on why Napoli is stuttering in Serie A at the moment while doing really, not to say exceptionally, well in Champions League. This article will look at some of the main points and speculate what the club can do to turn things around.
A point of criticism often heard is that Napoli is a one trick pony that can only play in one way ai??i?? and that is on the counter attack. While this assessment is actually fairly accurate, it does not tell the whole truth. Last season a typical Napoli game, no matter if it was away or home at Stadio San Paolo started out with Napoli letting the opposition come to them. Mazzarri’s men would stand back, soak up pressure, and try to hit on a counter or two. With Maggio and Dossena as the wing backs it was easy to switch the 3-5-2 into a more defensive 5-3-2. It lead to many nervous first twenty minutes for the fans but was clearly a part of the plan and they often succeeded with it.
Then slowly after the opponents had been tired by bouncing balls off the Napoli wall for some time, Napoli would slowly take over the game, while getting more and more possession. This meant that Napoli in reality only was playing outright on the counter for around a quarter of each game ai??i?? unless up with a couple of goals, where they often would stand a bit back again. So while many goals came from the counter, especially against high profiled and offensive teams, a lot of the victories against the smaller teams were actually created via slowly gained possession.
One of the main reasons Napoli at the moment are struggling to get the goals against the smaller teams is that not only has the speed of Maggio, Lavezzi, Hamsik, and Cavani on the counter become old news, the minnows have also learned how to better dismantle the possession driven attacks, which rely heavily on the wings. If Maggio, Dossena, or Zuniga cannot get behind the defence, Napoli have huge problems getting the chances. The defensive midfielders Inler and Gargano are great at breaking up play and starting counters, but they are not fast enough nor innovative enough for fast combinations up front. With Uruguayan ace Cavani being more of a target man and Slovakian national captain Hamsik being a typical end to end midfielder Napoli seriously lack ideas if the opponents manage to stall the speed of the attacks.
Napoli basically have two players who can regularly pass a man in one on one situations ai??i?? Zuniga and Lavezzi. Especially the latter’s importance cannot be underestimated. Out of the talented, slightly selfish, fast, and smiling boy who came to southern Italy more than four years ago has come a seasoned, clever and strong man ai??i?? and the speed or the smile haven’t disappeared. To see Lavezzi play is one of the truly enjoyable sights these years, and when he’s out due to injury, which has been the case the last month, his team lacks his qualities severely. A healthy Lavezzi is not a miracle cure, but he makes sure that the opponents can never rest and that his fans never have to give up on hope. Hopefully for Napoli the new signing Eduardo Vargas will prove to have some of the same qualities.
So what can be done about the offensive problems? Coach Mazzarri has been trying to reshuffle, also out of a need to rest the players, but nothing has really seemed to work. Zuniga is better at breaking deadlocks at the left flank than Doseena, but for all his dynamics he lacks the quality crossing and the defensive skill. Swiss midfielder Dzemaili has not been a real hit, suffering from the same lack of ideas as the other midfielders. Inter loanee Goran Pandev has been a decent addition to the squad but he’s better as a Cavani alternative than as the Lavezzi alternative he has mostly been used as.
When you count in long term injuries to former Fiorentina midfielder Donadel, who Mazzarri apparently doesn’t really trust anyway, and former Bologna defender Britos, the alternatives have been more of a paper tiger than a reality. And then we haven’t even touched what seems to be the untrusted deadwood of the squad in veteran defender Grava, his defence colleague Fideleff, winger Santana and mystery signing number one the attacker Chavez.
All in all the shutting down of the counter attacks is not the real problem for Napoli. It is the shutting down of the wings in every phase of the game that really hampers the team. Napoli need one or two players that can break through the middle ai??i?? or some intensive training sessions in David Beckham-esque early crosses towards the head of Cavani.
