Its recurrence is becoming far too frequent for anybody’s liking now, not that even a single occurrence is not disgraceful enough. The sport that attracts the most passionate of fans across the globe is expected to play in the best spirit and at the highest level of integrity, but that appears to be far from the case in Italy presently. The newly emerged match-fixing scandal has once again rocked the world and has thrown big questions on the way football is being run in the country. The latest allegation on Gianluigi Buffon’s involvement in betting activities is likely to have a huge impact on Italy’s performance in Ukraine in a week’s time.
It is difficult to say whether the problem is restricted only to Italy or the other big leagues too have been contaminated with this disease and that it is only a matter of what is out in open and what is concealed. While the investigations are in place and the right moves have been made so far, this confirms the worst fears that the betting rackets that are in operation have successfully formed dubious syndicates with players and clubs and are inflicting the game to a great extent.
In order to understand the problem that is far deep-rooted than the superficial information that is generally made available to the public, TheHardTackle’s Serie A editor and contributor Parth Pandya talks to two of the senior Italian football journalists, who have observed the game in peninsula from a fairly close proximity over a long period of time. Joining us today are Giancarlo Rinaldi and Rob Paton who throw insights at some of the most daunting questions that football faces in Italy today.
To throw light at the credentials of our guests today, Giancarlo Rinaldi is a renowned football enthusiast and a very close follower of the game. Hailing from Scottish-Italian origins, he has written on several leading publications that includes the likes of BBC, Football Italia and Serie A weekly. His blog, that mainly features articles on Fiorentina stood 22nd on the list of 100 blogs that The Guardian recommends to follow.
Our second guest today is Rob Paton from London who writes for Football Italia. He is also a contributor to the magazines Soccer Italia and Soccer 360. In the past, Rob has also been in association with Football Italiano and A Different League. Both the guests provide their insightful inputs on the troubles that Italian football faces.
Parth: This is the second time in six years now. Is it fair to suggest Italy is consistently failing to take any lessons from the past or do you think the corruption is too far deep rooted to be completely eradicated?
Giancarlo:Ai??There is a mindset in Italy, especially at the end of a season, that there is not much wrong with playing out results which suit both teams. Unfortunately, this attitude is easily extended throughout the game. There are important differences, however, between the Last Bet and Calciopoli scandals. The latter was a network of influence on refereeing appointments, the former an apparent link between gambling groups and players.
Rob:Ai??I think the fact these investigations are in existence is proof that Italy is learning from its past. It is probably impossible to completely eradicate, however.
Parth: Looking at the repetition in these unfortunate events, one may just feel there is something faulty at the level of administration that fails to counter these suspicious activities. Do you think Italian football has failed to adapt to the modern day practices of sports administration?
Giancarlo:Ai??There is a problem there in terms of monitoring and dealing with such issues. However, the alleged level of subterfuge used by some of those involved would make it hard to trace. At least it is now being tackled head on and in a very public manner.
Rob:Ai??I think authorities across Europeai??i??s big Leagues are failing to grasp fully what the sport does and what happens within it behind closed doors. I donai??i??t think it is a specific failing of Italy.
Parth: Andrea Agnelli in his recent interview at the London School of Business said that the general conditions of the Italian economy and the financial capabilities are not adequate to run more than 100 clubs across different tiers and that many of these clubs fail to pay wages to their players and run on great financial irregularities which makes players vulnerable to these betting rackets. Do you think Italian football needs basic structural changes? Could reducing the number of clubs be one of them?
Giancarlo:Ai??The number of clubs falling into financial problems would seem to suggest that the current structure is unsustainable unless costs are greatly reduced, especially for lower tier sides. A smaller number of teams in the professional structure would seem to make sense from that point of view.
Rob:Ai??Thereai??i??s certainly fewer avenues for smaller, local clubs in Italy to grow given the economic climate, but I donai??i??t think structural change is needed. A recession is designed to remove the weakest businesses naturally, and it may take a few clubs along with it in this particular case. To change the structure of the League would be unecessary. Those who should survive are those that will of their own accord.
Parth: Well, betting has been an imminent problem that Calcio has been facing for some time now but even apart from that, football is not in the best health in Italy. Top clubs are failing to deliver in Champions League and Serie A is no longer the preferred destination of top players in the world that it once used to be. Do you see any reason to hope for things to change in a foreseeable future or will Serie A be pretty comprehensively beaten in the race in the next five years to come?
Giancarlo:Ai??Juventus have taken a lead with their new stadium and shown a route which can help to revive Italian football. Increased revenue on matchdays and for other events can help fund an improvement. Work also needs to be done on improving merchandising sales of the clubs. With Financial Fair Play possibly curbing the spending of other nations, Serie A can recover and compete but it won’t happen overnight.
Rob:Ai??Lots of hope for Italy going ahead. In terms of European football, it tends to work in cycles that a particular League holds aAi??dominantAi??force over the others. Italy have some of the best Coaches out there, a better training focus on Coaches and youth than the English, a more sound economic base than Spanish clubs, and a more exciting style of play than the Germans (in my opinion). Letai??i??s just get the stadiums sorted out in Serie A.
Parth: Well, the Euros are upon us in one week’s time and some circles are already fantasizing a repeat of 1982 and 2006 where despite the scandalous environment having contaminated the football back home, the national side managed to win the highest prize. However, it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to realize that this team is no match for the ones in the past but to what extent do you think the recent turn of events could implicate Italy’s performance in the competition? Will the general morale be affected to further Prandelli’s problems who is anyway dealing with a squad that is far from great?
Giancarlo:Ai??Sometimes adversity can boost team spirit and that has proved to be the case with the Azzurri in the past. I would view this Euro campaign as a building block towards the World Cup. If Italy can produce the kind of football Prandelli wants, regardless of results, that would give reason for optimism.
Rob:Ai??I think De Rossi summed this up well. Itai??i??s different to 2006, as then it was clubs and directors, but now it is players themselves. However, tournament football is not normal in any way, conditions are warped, so who knows what effect this will have on 23 men living, eating and playing football together for six weeks? They may be in the perfect climate to shut the world out for one thing.
