Liverpool v Manchester United : Rival Rendezvous

"You can call me “big-mouth”, “biter”, “diver”. There is proof. But to call me a racist – that hurts a lot."

As far as football rivalries go, few can match the scale, intensity and history between a Liverpool and Manchester United encounter. The two most decorated clubs in English football square off against each other on Sunday against the backdrop of the Hillsborough verdict. Ai??Both sides have had some memorable matches over the years and this time too the drama is expected to be intense. Expectations are at fever pitch as TheHardTackle resident authors Sreyon Chatterjee and Arjun Some engage in aAi??tA?te-Ai??-tA?teAi??ahead of a truly momentous match in our Rival Rendezvous series.

Arjun Some [AS] goes first.

[AS]Ai??The first home match after publication of the report by Hillsborough Independent Panel and of all the teams in the land it is Manchester United who come calling. Would you have preferred it to be someone ai??i?? anyone ai??i?? else?

[SC]Ai??To be honest, no. The decision on Hillsborough was a momentous one and emotions will be highAi??amongAi??everyone present at Anfield including the players. While no Liverpool player needs any extra motivation to do well against Manchester United, the Hillsborough decision will certainly provide an extra push to the players to do well in front of their home crowd. The Ai??famed 12th man for Liverpool will certainly be up for this game and the fans will be in full voice throughout the match.Ai??Liverpool have had a poor run of results of late despite playing some decent football. The game at the weekend may just turn help them turn the corner.

[AS]Ai??What will the atmosphere be like within Anfield? Less vitriolic than the usual?

[SC]Ai??The build-up to this match has certainly hinted towards the same. Sir Alex has been vocal about burying the hatchet and has expressed a show of solidarity towards the Hillsborough families. A letter from the manager will be issued to the United fans ahead of the game. There have been a series of tributes planned before kick-off including one where team captains Steven Gerrard and Nemanja Vidic are set to release 96 balloons in Ai??remembrance of those who lost their lives at Hillsborough. Suarez and Evra are also expected to shake hands before the match. However, all niceties are sure to come to an end once the whistle blows!

[AS]Ai??Coming to football matters, how badly does Brendan Rodgers need to win this one? Any defeat to the old rivals is deemed to be unacceptable, but after the start they have made this season will another reversal be catastrophic?

[SC]Ai??Liverpool have picked up just two points from their first two games but it so easily could have been 6. At a club like Liverpool there is always pressure to win no matter what the opposition. It is already the worst start for Liverpool in the Premier League era but this team is a work in progress and Rodgers must be given time to implement his ideas on the pitch. Top 4 is a priority this season and a win would definitely be nice but its not time to hit the panic button yet.

[AS]Ai??Performances notwithstanding, if Rodgersai??i?? style of play does not start to yield points on board, do you see Liverpool hierarchy keeping faith in a man who steadfastly refuses to adopt any plan B?

[SC] Rodgers’ approach to the game must be commended. It is easy to hoof the ball up the pitch when things aren’t quite going your way but the new Liverpool manager has been courageous in trying to implement a football philosophy which will hopefully become an identity of the club in the years to come. Once Rodgers’ plan of ‘death by football’ takes shape, there wont really be a need for Plan B. The owners at Liverpool have placed immense faith on Ai??Rodgers and he will definitely be given time to implement this long-term project. Results might take time but the signs are already there that they will come sooner rather than later.

[AS]Ai??Is this the match maybe where Jose Enrique should return to the lineup in place of either Kelly or Johnson, both of whom have been culpable for conceding goals this season?

[SC] I think the problem has been more down to tactics than personnel. Rodgers’ approach requires his full-backs to play much higher up the pitch than under his predecessor Kenny Dalglish. The resulting space behind has been exploited by teams on the counter attack. Lucas was an expert at covering the space behind the defenders and The Reds will definitely be missing him. Joe Allen and his midfield partner would thus have to probably work harder to plug the gaps. Johnson has been one of the primary attacking outlets over the years and it would be criminal to drop him especially when the team is lacking goals. However, perhaps it would be better if Enrique starts so that Johnson can move back to his preferred right-back slot.

[AS]Ai??Given the dearth of available strikers at Rodgersai??i?? disposal, how big a concern is Fabio Boriniai??i??s lack of goalscoring form?

[SC]Ai??Yes, Borini’s form has definitely been a cause of concern. When you have just two recognised strikers in your squad then it is imperative that they do their job well. Borini has had a shaky start to life at Anfield and has missed a couple of good chances. The fact that he has been playing on the right hasn’t helped his case either. However there have been signs that the goals are going to come for him soon.Ai??Borini has clever movement and can make runs behind the central defenders. He also has a knack of taking up good positions inside the box. Taking this into account Borini’s goal return would probably improve if he and Suarez swapped positions. We have to wait and see if Rodgers does the same on Sunday.

It is Sreyon Chatterjee’s [SC] turn to ask the questions next.

[SC]Ai??After a historic week in English football, fans from clubs across the country have paid tribute to the 96 who lost their lives at Hillsborough. How do the majority of Manchester United fans feel about this?

[AS]Ai??Let me assure you, the majority of Manchester United fans are decent human beings first before being a fan. Make no mistake about it, we are aware that things such as rivalry and tribalism loses significance when weighed against a single human life, let alone 96. We know it was Liverpool’s loss, but we also know it could easily have been ours had United not lost the quarter-final tie that season to Nottingham Forrest. We have been moved by the grave dignity with which the Hillsborough Support Groups had campaigned for over 23 years in their quest to uncover the truth. And we, like supporters of every other club in the country, appreciate the fact that the truth was finally brought to light.

Unfortunately, we are not answerable for the actions of a minority who are a disgrace to the proud history and heritage of our great club. These cretins, who possess the temerity to call themselves Manchester United fans, were the ones responsible for the distasteful chants at the Wigan match and no matter how much Sir Alex and the club pleads with them, they shall never be quieted. What we do hope will happen on Sunday at Anfield is the vast majority of the true United fans, in cohesion with the Liverpool fans, will drown out the sickening chants.

[SC]Ai??United’s defense continues to be a problem with Jones and Smalling still out through injury. Ferdinand’s age is catching up with him and Evans is not quite up there in terms of quality yet. Will Sir Alex loosen his purse strings again in January to bolster the defence?

[AS]Ai??With five senior central defenders, as mentioned by you, already on the books and with another one in Michael Keane in the academy threatening to break through, it is highly unlikely that Sir Alex will look bring in more cover in that position. Nevertheless, as you have rightly pointed out, this area in the field continues to be a problem for Sir Alex for the third season running. While Vidicai??i??s injury last season can be termed as an accident, the genuine concern for United is that both Smalling and Jones have demonstrated a frustrating tendency to pick up minor niggles which may no longer be blamed on just ill-fortune.Ai?? Especially in Jonesai??i?? case, when his all action style of play basically invites such knocks. It will be disappointing to see if such a talented pair ai??i?? a future centre-half partnership for club and country ai??i?? fails to realize their full potential due to a spate of injuries suffered at this crucial juncture of their careers.

I would though beg to differ on your assertion regarding Johnny Evansai??i?? ability. After an outstanding start to his senior career during the 2008-09 season (which included his nerveless display at San Siro against Jose Mourinhoai??i??s Inter), he too picked a series of niggling knocks which set him back over the course of the next two seasons. However last season, which was deemed by many to be his last chance saloon, he finally delivered on his early promise with a series of defensive master-classes. His remarkable form even prompted Sir Alex to anoint him as the best defender in the league at the time. So as long as any two out of Vidic, Rio and Evans remain fit, United defense is in good hands. And forget not, there is always Michael Carrick to call upon!

[SC]Ai??Much has been already made about the Evra-Suarez handshake but Alexander Buttner made a stunning Premier League debut last week against Wigan. What are the chances of him starting ahead of Evra against Liverpool and what can be expected of him?

[AS]Ai??In the aftermath of the Wigan game, there was one particular stat in a website that caught my attention. During the match, Buttner gave away possession seven times ai??i?? a record high in this seasonai??i??s Premier League by any player in a single match. While itai??i??s easy to get carried away by his goal and assist in the match, as Sir Alex pointed out in his post-match interview the lad is understandably a bit raw when it comes to defending and tends to dive into challenges. Itai??i??s needless to say such attributes wonai??i??t stand him in good stead in a match against Liverpool in the cauldron of Anfield. So itai??i??s Evra – in spite of all the Suarez related baggage – who starts for me.

[SC]Ai??The last time Robin Van Persie visited Anfield he scored a brace which helped Arsenal win in stoppage time. How important will he be for United especially with Rooney out injured?

[AS]Ai??No matter which club Robin van Persie moved to in the summer, he would have been absolutely pivotal to that teamai??i??s success on the pitch. At United, itai??i??s no different. He has already underlined his importance to the team with the virtuoso display against Southampton. Even though he has arrived recently, RVP has spent too many years on these shores for the significance of the fixture to be lost on him. This, after all, is the game where legends are born. A certain Diego Forlan can tell you all about it.

RVP with his clinical finishing will be critical to Unitedai??i??s fortunes on Sunday in the sense that they have struggled to create too many goal-scoring opportunities at Anfield in recent years. In fact, RVPai??i??s brace in his last visit to Anfield is one more than what United as a team has been able to score there in a match since 2003/04 season. And when chances are at a premium, van Persieai??i??s the man you want them to fall to. So better put on your scoring boots on Sunday, Robin!

[SC]Ai??Liverpool and Manchester United have quality players all over the pitch. What will be the key battles in your opinion?

[AS]Ai??While Iai??i??ve picked Evra to start the match in the earlier response, the choice had more to do with the inexperience of the alternative candidate rather than the Frenchmanai??i??s own infallibility. Evra has been on a downhill slide ever since the fiasco at the last World Cup and nowadays the sight of a fleet footed winger running at the left back is enough to leave United fans in a cold sweat. On Sunday, heai??i??ll come up against Raheem Sterling (whoai??i??s nothing, if not fleet footed) ai??i?? the brightest spark in Liverpoolai??i??s season so far. With the Anfield crown behind him, I fully expect the youngster to severely test the veteran full back. But crucially thatai??i??s just half the story. Even though defensively Evra has become increasingly suspect, he still remains one of the finest attacking full backs in the league. And the youthful effervescence, which makes Sterling such a potent threat going forward, does not usually gel with defensive discipline. So watch that flank closely folks, itai??i??ll be the stage for a fascinating duel.

The other key battle will be establishing control in the middle of the park. For Rodgersai??i?? game-plan to come to fruition, it is essential for Joe Allen to find his usual metronomic range of passing. But given the fact that this is, by a good stretch, the biggest game in the 22 year oldai??i??s fledgling career, not to mention the emotional backdrop to this match, it will be interesting to see if the occasion overwhelms him. Michael Carrick, on the contrary, has been in such situations multiple times before and would know exactly what needs to be done. Whether he can go out there and do it is something on which the fate of this match will ultimately hinge.

[SC] United have now won 3 on the bounce after their opening day loss against Everton. How optimistic are you about United’s chances of making it 4 in a row at Anfield?

[AS] Quietly optimistic, I would say. Even though in recent seasons, this fixture could rarely be labeled as a potential title decider, it still remains the glamour tie in English football and will continue to be so for the foreseeable future. For me personally as well, it is the first fixture I lookout for when the list is announced and so many of my favourite United moments have come in this fixture. And I know this might sound clichAi??d, but in this tie the form book truly goes out of the window.

In recent seasons, United have had a poor time off it at Anfield with their last win coming as far back in as 2007. Like Iai??i??ve said above, lack of goals have been the Achilles heel for the team but this time with RVP in the mix, I can see that changing. Fingers crossed!var
