When Beppe Marotta and Antonio Conte made the decision of letting Alberto Aquilani and Felipe Melo leave the club in the summer, people thought Juve would struggle to replace them in the centre of midfield. Indeed, Aquilani and Melo were two bright spots in an otherwise abysmal season for Juventus. Aquilani added a new dimension to the Juventus midfield. He brought creativity with him along with guile and was always dynamic and comfortable on the ball.
Felipe Melo, on the other hand, was utterly dominant in the last campaign for Juventus. He was arguably the best holding midfielder in the league and tamed the fire-slewing demons of his past after he was offered a second chance by the club. Melo provided the steel in midfield, while Aquilani brought elegance and quality to the table.

With the appointment of Antonio Conte as the manager of Juventus, the decision to release them both was made. Melo was shipped off to Galatasary on loan, while Marotta decided against meeting Liverpoolai??i??s asking price of A?14M. In came veteran midfielder Andrea Pirlo from Milan and Chilean International Arturo Vidal from Bayer Leverkusen.
While there was general excitement regarding Andrea Pirloai??i??s arrival, there was also a feeling of pessimism surrounding his signing. Pirlo was coming off one of his most lackluster campaigns of an otherwise illustrious career. His injury record in the 2010-2011 season wasnai??i??t the most encouraging as he managed to rack up just 12 games in Serie A. For Juventus this campaign, Pirlo has missed out on just a single game. But stats merely do not justify his contribution to Juventusai??i?? remarkable campaign so far.
His fitness has drastically improved under Conte and his ability to control the tempo of the game remains unique in world football. What Pirlo brings to the table is years of experience coupled with unparalleled vision and creativity. Given that he arrived on a bosman, this could just be the deal of the season.
But Pirloai??i??s sensational return to form is also down to his fellow midfielders, namely Claudio Marchisio and Arturo Vidal. Marchisio, a Juventino through and through has finally shown the kind of promise and talent we all knew he possessed. After a couple of seasons of being played out of position, Conte has brought him back to his favored position.
Alongside Pirlo and Vidal, Marchisio has flourished and really come into his own this campaign. But what makes him so important to Juventusai??i?? set-up is his tactical awareness and his ability to cover for other players in the team. Marchisio has 7 goals and 4 assists to his name and although his form did dip post the winter break, the last few games have shown signs of recovery from Il Principino. His characteristic late runs into the box have earned him a few goals but his ability to perform in the big games has been to Juventusai??i?? success against the bigger sides this season. His tenacity and ability to read the game along with his versatility makes him essential to Antonio Conteai??i??s system. Marchisio’s progress and maturity is there to be seen and he has even earned comparisons to the great Marco Tardelli.
If Marchisio has been excellent in recent weeks, than Arturo Vidal has been nothing short of phenomenal. The Chilean hotshot arrived at Juventus in the summer for ai??i??12.5Ai??M from Leverkusen having reportedly rejected moves to Bayern Munich and AC Milan. After an explosive start to his Serie A campaign, where Vidal hit the back of the net on his debut against Parma six minutes after coming on as a substitute, Vidal has grown to be an irreplaceable part of Juventusai??i?? midfield.

Vidal has been a tower of strength in midfield and was thought to be a direct replacement for Felipe Melo. But in his short career at Juventus, Vidal has surpassed all expectations and has arguably performed better than Melo did while in Turin. Back-to-back man of the match performances against Inter and Napoli have allowed to showcase the potential that saw him touted as one of the hottest properties in Europe.
His latest showing against Napoli in particular underlined his dominating ability in midfield. Vidal patrolled the midfield and was everywhere; winning back possession, hustling and harrying the opponents, he completely over-ran Napoliai??i??s midfield duo of Walter Gargano and Gokhan Inler. It once again testified the fact that Vidal is right up there amongst the most complete midfielders in the league. At 24 years of age, Vidal has his best years ahead of him and has frightening potential. Heai??i??s been likened to Juventus great Edgar Davids but based on his peformances Ai??this campaign, Vidal certainly has it in him to surpass the legendary Dutchman.
These three players have been stupendous for Juventus collectively and is the very reason why the Italian media has been quick to hail the trio as best midfield in Italy and second only to Barca in Europe. While the latter claim seems a bit premature since this Juventus midfield hasnai??i??t been tested in Europe, the former most certainly isnai??i??t an exaggeration.
The intensity and endless pressing has hugely contributed to Juventusai??i?? resurgence this season and that is down to the midfield and the mentality that Antonio Conte has managed to instill in his Juventus side. With an incredible average possession of 61% this season, it isnai??i??t hard to see why the midfield has been heralded as the best in Italy. As we enter the business end of the season, the midfield trident have shifted into top gear just when it matters most.
With promising young players in Manuel Giandonato, Gabriel Appelt, Ouasim Buoy, Luca Marrone and Albin Ekdal all in the Juventus ranks, the future of the Bianconeri midfield looks bright. If Juventus do go on to attain the elusive silverware in this campaign, credit has to be given to the Juventus midfield which is their strongest department.
