ai??i?? Andrey Arshavin, two days after the closing of a memorable transfer window
Itai??i??s unusual for a football fan to reminisce about the transfer deadline day with the fervor and passion of a closely won derby or a barely believable wonder-goal. But ask any Arsenal enthusiast and his face will flush over with excitement as he furnishes you with a blow-by-blow account of January 31st 2009; a litany of twists, turns, caveats and false dawns, sudden news that he had joined, equally sudden news that he hadnai??i??t joined, not yet – a veritable merry-go-round of madness that ended with Andrey Arshavinai??i??s impish grin in red-and-white.
A few years later (years that havenai??i??t recaptured much of the hurtling excitement of that initial day) Arshavin now heads back to Zenit on loan, a man shorn of confidence and fighting for match-time before the Euros . Itai??i??s been a steep fall from grace for a player who was the talk of most towns when he came, expected to take up the mantle of the departing Ronaldo and adding gloss to the Premier League. Just how did things get so pear-shaped?
The Arrival – Honeymoon Periods and Anfield Magic
When Arshavin started his first Premier League game against Sunderland, anticipation was at fever-pitch. Ai??After all, this was the first high-profile player Arsenal had brought in years; his stock akin to the Hazards and Goetzes of today after his thundering performances in Euro 2008. Moreover, even his most vociferous critic will admit that Arsene Wenger has seen something special in a player when he pays 15 million pounds for him. Over the course of four months, Arshavin demonstrated that special something in dollops and dollops.

He was never the most active of runners even in his heyday, but he had the general willingness to work hard and do well, a feeling expected of any new arrival. This willingness, coupled with deceptively podgy legs that could dribble the life out of a defender, strength belying his small stature, backlift tending to zero and a penchant for changing matches – made Arshavinai??i??s first half-season one never-ending purple patch.
Two performances stand out – Blackburn and, gloriously, Liverpool. The home game against The Rovers ended a record-equaling run of four draws, not the sort of record any team wants. Arshavin pulled the strings throughout the ninety minutes alongside Denilson and Song, his best moment coming when he waddled down the byline, left an opponent on his backside and lifted it above Robinson from the acutest of angles. No one else at Arsenal could have done that.
Staying on the topic of things no one else at Arsenal could have done, Arshavinai??i??s Liverpool quadruple left even the most adroit of commentators reaching for the thesaurus of superlatives. Ai??He wasnai??i??t having the best of matches in the first half, but exhibited that mercurial game-changing quality again as he swept in one, thundered in two, squeezed in three and walloped in four. His grinning, shushing visage adorned the display pictures of countless social networking profiles for months to come. His six goals, seven assists and priceless morale boost during this period got the Gunners into the Champions League, and Arshavin was officially an Arsenal darling.
The Departure – Lone Striker Blues And Vicious Circles
Arshavinai??i??s subsequent seasons never reached the dizzying heights of his initial few months, and understandably so; everything went right during his first half-season and it would be unreasonable to expect the same universal goodness to manifest itself throughout his career. He had some decent games interspersed with poor outings, no better or worse than any of his teammates, and his Arsenal trajectory was following a contended 7/10 path.
When Arsenal had their annual injury crisis though, it was the striker position that bore the brunt this time. Van Persie got injured in some extraneous international friendly and Eduardo was painfully shy of confidence, which meant that valiant little Arshavin was made to plow his way upfront amidst giant, lumbering center backs who beat him black, blue and a motley of other colors.

He played there, but everyone could see that he was hardly joyous when asked to lead the line. A barrage of average outings ensued, owing to his physical inability to play as a lone striker, his intrinsic lethargy and his self-critical nature.
Ah, his self-critical nature! It can be the greatest of banes to a footballer who works on confidence, and so it proved here. Every banal performance was analyzed and dissected without mercy, and the succeeding performance was always iffy as a result; every move tinged with self-doubt, every touch unsure, every shot wobbly. He needed good games to get out of the rut, but every bad game sucked him deeper into the quicksand of critique he had fashioned for himself. It was a vicious circle, and it was the eventual undoing of Arshavin. He went from a flair player, to a player who didnai??i??t run about much but got the vital goal or key assist, to just a player who didnai??i??t run around much.
As he jets off to The Motherland, Arshavin leaves behind a mixture of huge potential unfulfilled, palpable regret and many, many memories. Even when he was in self-analytical mode, he could pop up with a fiercely controlled low shot into the far corner, a shot worthy enough to bring Barcelona to their knees. Arshavin was always more of an irregular magic-man than Mr. Consistent, but the magic just got more and more irregular until it was all but puffed out.
Nonetheless, if the cheeky fashion designer from Leningrad had started Arsenalai??i??s next match (at Anfield, wouldnai??i??t you just know it) and belted one it from thirty-five yards, wheeling away with gleeful beam and trademark shush, not one of us would have been surprised. Not one!
