26th August, 2012. Milan host Sampdoria in their first home game for the 2012/13 season. For the uninitiated, Milan were expected to win against the promoted club, Sampdoria. A slow start to the season was on the cards, as Milan had sold their heart and soul and almost everyone who can inspire the club in the transfer market. By selling players in their prime and bringing in ai???reinforcementsai??i?? like Bakaye Traore and Kevin Constant, Milan have clearly shown that they want to replicate the strategy followed by Arsene Wenger and Arsenal. However, the fact is, this is Italy and not EPL, and Milan are not even a shadow of the side which won the Scudetto few seasons back.
Hosting Sampdoria in front of the home crowd, Allegri was asked to start the new season on a winning note. With the last-minute transfer of Nigel de Jong and the panic buy of Bojan Krkic, Uncle Fester now wanted Allegri to challenge for the Scudetto as he had ai???no reason not to win it this timeai??i??. 58 minutes later, the score line read 0 ai??i?? 1 in favor of Sampdoria. It remained the same till the end, handing Milan a rare home defeat in the very first match of the season, the last one coming in 2008.
Fast forward two matches and we arrive at 16th September, 2012 ai??i?? scene of Milanai??i??s second home game against Atalanta. After the ego-boosting 3-1 victory over Bologna, where Pazziniai??i??s hat-trick compelled Uncle Fester to compare him with Pippo Inzaghi, Milan looked to have finally put the opening day loss behind them. 64 minutes later, the same score line came to haunt Milan. 0 ai??i?? 1. Both relegation fodder team, both score lines ending with the same margin, and at the end of both, Allegriai??i??s frown. The last time Milan lost two back-to-back opening home fixtures was way back in 1930/31 season. So what is going wrong at Milan?
Milan need an urgent change in formation
Do you choose players to fit into your formation or do you choose the formation based on your players? This is an age-old question but one which has been doing the rounds at Milanello surely nowadays. If a coach is strong enough tactically, he can mold his players to fit into his formation. But then again, one needs players who are willing to follow what the coach says to the hilt. On the other hand, shouldnai??i??t the type of players at oneai??i??s disposal decide the formation a team will play in? After all, playing a midfielder as trequartista is not going to yield any results if the player suffers from severe lack of creativity.
That brings us to the position which Milan have been unable to fill after the departure of Kaka ai??i?? the hole behind the striker. There have been many, many players whom Allegri have tried to play as trequartista, but sadly no one has been able to really claim that position as his own. Seedorf, who played in that position was a revelation in the Champions League fixtures, but was not able to carry his form in Serie A on a consistent basis. The same goes for Ronaldinho. Coming back to present times, we find Boateng playing as trequartista whereas his ideal position is on the right of midfield.
Boateng ai??i?? a player wasted
In the three matches so far this season, Boateng has had 20 shots and none of them resulting in goals. But does that make him a bad player? No. Milan have used his energy to get free-kicks in the final third on many occasions in the three matches but other than that Boateng is being wasted at that position.
After the Milan side was stripped off the last bit of creativity in the summer, Uncle Fester brought in a kung-fu star but he forgot to bring in any creative talents. But letai??i??s not blame him for that. After all, since Allegriai??i??s arrival, Milan have turned into a physical monster capable of bull-dozing opponents with their raw strength. One by one, every creative force was shown the door as they ai???did not fit into the systemai??i??. Pirlo, Ronaldinho, Seedorf ai??i?? all bade goodbye to San Siro in the recent years.
Give 4-3-3 a try
So should Milan try a different formation? Absolutely. For the first time in pre-season, Allegri experimented with 4-3-3, giving his 4-3-1-2 a rest. The result was impressive, but as soon as the season started, he panicked and reverted to his favored formation, disregarding that he did not have players for it. A 4-3-3 might just work for Milan but for that, Allegri has to give up his favored position on the field ai??i?? the defensive midfielder. The success of the system hinges on the role of the central player and the two midfielders who can supply the forward line. Even though Mark van Bommel left this summer, the acquisition of Nigel de Jong suggests that Allegri is unlikely to get rid of the defensive midfielder role any-time soon.
The forward line can be broken down into two parts ai??i?? the central forward and the wingers. With the acquisition of Pazzini, Milan can play him as central forward and with the appropriate amount of supply, he can turn into a lethal one at that. That will leave the wings open for Bojan and El Shaarawy to slot into. El Shaarawy started off as a right winger but over a period of time, has developed the tendency to drop deep. The effectiveness of Bojan can only be realized if he is played on the wings and not as a regular striker or midfielder. However, this formation can work until Pato and Robinho return. Pato is known to play as solo striker and can be used in place of Pazzini. Mai??i??Baye Niang is still to play his first match in Serie A, and given Allegriai??i??s affinity towards big names, it will take time for him to shine. After the midfield and the forward line was stripped off all creativity, the defence line is laid bare and the best thing at Milanai??i??s disposal is Bonera. Yes, you heard that right. Acerbi still has a long, long way to go to even think of being counted as reliable, and under Boneraai??i??s tutelage, it might take longer than Liverpoolai??i??s barren run. Another defensive buy, Zapata has rarely featured this season. When he was playing for Udinese, Zapata was a force to reckon with but somehow it seems Allegri does not trust him enough to play him on a regular basis.
Milan have the players to adopt the 4-3-3 and make it work. But, do they have the courage to try something new? Allegri will be made the scapegoat at the end of the season if he is not able to deliver results, because at the end, the players play as the coach tells them to play. Emanuelson was grossly under-used and given that he can play anywhere on the left flank, he is being forced to play as trequartista!
