This weekendai??i??s FA Cup third round means a break from the NPower Championship for one week. As the season has just passed the halfway stage, this gives TheHardTackle a chance to assess the season so far and look forward to what lies ahead.
Twenty-five games in, it couldnai??i??t be any tighter at the top of the table. After promotion from League One last season, Southampton have adapted to life a tier above in sensational fashion. The leaders for much of the campaign, key to their success has been their superb home form. From midway through last seasonai??i??s League One campaign continuing through to this season, the Saints won an incredible 21 successive league games at the St Maryai??i??s Stadium. Blackpoolai??i??s 2-2 draw on December 10th put an end to the perfect record, then, in Saintsai??i?? last home game of 2011, Bristol City became the first away side in over a year to win to leave with all 3 points.
With goalkeeper Kelvin Davis and the likes of defenders Frazer Richardson and Jose Fonte impressing, Saints have been strong at the back. But, it is in attack where their main qualities lie. Star striker Rickie Lambert leads the way in the NPower Championship charts with 15 goals, whilst Brazilian midfielder Guly Do Prado and talented playmaker Adam Lallana have both chipped in with their fair share. The last six weeks or so though have proven to be difficult for the leaders, with defeats to Bristol City (twice), Doncaster Rovers and, most recently,Ai?? South Coast rivals Brighton, meaning their lead at the top of the table has disintegrated.
Sam Allardyceai??i??s West Ham United currently sit in second place, level with the Saints on 47 points. With a squad full of ex-Premier League stars, the Hammers were many peopleai??i??s favourites to make an instant return to the Premier League. Early struggles at home cast doubts on this prediction, although their away form (6 wins), has been impressive throughout. Whilst Southamptonai??i??s success has stolen all the headlines, Allardyceai??i??s men have plodded along. They have rectified their form at Upton Park with the likes of Carlton Cole and Sam Baldock providing the goals which have kept them in the top two for most of the campaign.
One of the main reasons for their success is the form of centre-half James Tomkins. The defender has been impressive and with rumours linking him with a January move to the Premier League, Newcastle United being one of his suitors, much of West Hamai??i??s hopes may depend on whether or not they can keep their star defender.
Hot on the heels of the top two are Middlesbrough and Cardiff City, who both lie only two points adrift. Under Tony Mowbray and Malky Mackay respectively, both sides are built on excellent defences. Well-organised and hard to break down, the goals of strikers Marvin Emnes, Scott MacDonald and Scotland International Kenny Miller have kept the two sides in the hunt for automatic promotion.
The race for the play-offs is just as exciting with only 6 points separating fifth and 16th place. In a division where anyone can beat anyone, a whole host of sides have occupied the Play-off positions at some point this season. Brighton and Derby County were amongst the early season pace-setters but both sides suffered dips in form, though recent upturns see them on the periphery of where they want to be.
Last yearai??i??s beaten finalists Reading are fifth following a run of three successive home wins. Former Premier League big boys Leeds Unitedai??i??s form has been up and down, one week winning impressively, the next losing games you would expect them to win. Striker Ross McCormack has plundered 11 goals so far, but another key performer for the Whites so far has been Robert Snodgrass, who has been exceptional. His recent injury lay-off has coincided with a run of only 1 win in 5 games, which has led to speculation in regards to the future of boss Simon Grayson.
One manager who did get the sack was Leicester Cityai??i??s former England boss Sven Goran-Eriksson. After spending a lot of money in the summer and enduring a poor start to the campaign, Eriksson was relieved of his duties. In his place, there was a return to the hotseat for Hull City boss Nigel Pearson, who led the Foxes to the League One title a few seasons ago. Whilst City have yet to hit the heights many predicted at the start of the season, Pearsonai??i??s side do sit handily placed outside the play-offs.
Pearsonai??i??s departure from the KC Stadium allowed former Liverpool and England midfielder Nick Barmby to take his first steps into management with hometown club Hull. Itai??i??s a case of so far so good for Barmby, as Hull currently sit sixth on 39 points.
Elsewhere in the play-off race, relegated Blackpool are in seventh. Ian Holloway has been shrewd in the transfer market bringing in veteran striker Kevin Phillips, as well as former Newcastle United forward Lomano Tresor Lua-Lua. He has also used the loan system to good effect, with Wiganai??i??s young winger Callum McManaman impressing, whilst Liverpoolai??i??s Jonjo Shelvey was named Player of the Month in November after netting 6 goals for the Seasiders.
Another relegated side Birmingham City have spent much of the season playing catch up due to their Europa League commitments. With some rounds of Championship football played midweek, the Blues have had to postpone matches due to clashes with their trips around Europe. This has left City in somewhat of a false position in the table. Still with two games in hand on their rivals, they sit 14th, 5 points off fifth.
Burnley manager Eddie Howe turned his team around from a side that lost four consecutive games to one that won 5 on the bounce. With the likes of Jay Rodriguez, Charlie Austin, fit-again Martin Paterson and on-loan Sam Vokes in their attack, the Clarets possess the firepower to mount a challenge for promotion.
Crystal Palace have defied pre-season predictions of a relegation battle to be mid-table, as well as Carling Cup semi-finalists (where they will face fellow Championship side Cardiff), and Peterborough United have continued to entertain scoring and conceding goals for fun as they lie in fifteenth. Keith Hillai??i??s Barnsley have recovered from a poor start to move up to 16th, only six points off the top six, thanks largely to the 19-goal partnership of strikers Ricardo Vaz Te and Craig Davies.
Portsmouth have had yet more off-field problems to deal with this season.Ai?? Owners Convers Sport Initiatives entered administration, leading to Pompey owner Vladimir Antonov stepping down, the threat of another points deduction and yet another search for new owners. They also had to deal with the blow of losing manager Steve Cotterrill to Nottingham Forest, with Michael Appleton coming in. Supporters may have questioned Michael who, but recent results suggest Pompey are on the up.
Sean Dyche has done a wonderful job with a young Watford side. As with Palace, the Hornets were many punditsai??i?? pick for relegation. But, with England Under-21 star Marvin Sordell impressing along with on-loan Wolves winger Michael Kightly, Watford have strung some impressive performances together and currently sit four places above the relegation zone.
So to the fight to stay in the division. The Bottom 6 is just as tight as at the top of the league. Out of the bottom 6, 3 clubs have already changed manager, whilst 1 is almost certainly on his last legs. Bristol City were first to act after a terrible start to the campaign. They parted company with manager Keith Millen, bringing in Derek McInnes. The Scot has done a fine job with the Robins picking up a number of impressive wins, including the double over leaders Southampton. However, despite the wins, they still sit too close to the bottom three for comfort.
Nottingham Forest also parted company with their manager. Steve McLaren was given his marching orders after a torrid start, replaced by ex-Pompey boss Cotterrill. Things started well for Cotterrill, but a run of over 10 hours without a goal leaves the two-time European Cup winners inside the bottom three.
Doncaster Rovers were the third team to change their manager. When Sean Oai??i??Driscoll was replaced by Dean Saunders, a bizarre transfer policy of bringing stars such as El Hadji Diouf, Pascal Chimbonda and once-rumoured target Real Madridai??i??s Mahamadou Diarra, on short ai??i??term contracts saw Rovers enjoy an upturn in form. Like Bristol City, they have won impressively, with prolific striker Billy Sharp often the driving force, but they have struggled to make it out of the bottom three. With Leicester City rumoured to have agreed a fee for Sharp, Rovers may continue to struggle in the second half of the season.
Ipswich Town manager Paul Jewell is in danger of being the next to face the axe. Town went on a run of seven successive defeats. He managed to turn things around briefly, but a home loss last time out to Nottingham Forest, means Jewell received the dreaded vote of confidence from the Ipswich board.
Millwall are only one place above the relegation zone despite going on a run of 3 successive wins earlier in the season. Striker Darius Henderson has netted nine times so far this season, but boss Kenny Jackett will be hoping the rest of the side chip in more to move the Lions to safety. Bottom club Coventry City also have a prolific striker in the shape of forward Lukas Jutkiewicz. He has scored 8 league goals so far, but results have not gone the Sky Blues way. Two wins from the last 3 games though does raise some hope for Andy Thornai??i??s men.
So there we have it. Just over halfway through the season, every club still has it all to play for. The chase for automatic promotion, the scramble for a Top 6 finish and the fight for survival, means the second half of the campaign promises to be even more exciting than what we have already seen.
