Blackburn Rovers, the former English Premier League champions and 2002 winners of the English League cup, now find themselves rock bottom of the Premier League table, rooted on 10 points, four points away from safety and with Liverpool and Manchester United to come before the end of the year. Times are truly depressing for Blackburn fans, as they find themselves going through probably the worst era in their lifetime.
Venky’s, a subsidary of the VH Group, specialising in meat processing and pharmaceutical products, purchased Blackburn Rovers last November, to much fanfare as the first Indian owners of a Premier League club.
Boasting links to Ronaldinho, and presenting R&B star Akon with a Blackburn Rovers shirt at the opening of a Venky’s Xpress, the three stooges of the Venky’s group, Venkatesh Rao, Balaji Rao and Anuradha Desai, promised the world to Blackburn Rovers fans, proclaiming that their vision was to have the club in the Champions League – pinnacle of European club competition. Little did the supporters know that promising the world meant a visit across the globe to play a friendly in India, at a time when the club were rooted to the bottom of the league.

Clearly enoying the attention they were garnering, the Venky’s trio continued their incredible claims, stating that Ronaldinho, David Beckham and Raul would be sought after as they looked to shoot the club from mid-table “mediocrity” to Champions League stardom.
Yet, the appointment of Steve Kean left many wondering just how these players were ever going to be persuaded to join the small town club, boasting a population of 105,000 people.Ai??More and more people each day are convinced that the agency that represents Steve Kean, the SEM Group, are behind the ludicrous decisions, signings and failures of Blackburn Rovers, as well as the installing of him as manager of the Premier League team, regardless of his non-existent experience as one.
However, Desai, Blackburn Rovers’ Chairperson, has denied that SEM or their compadres at Kentaro, are involved in the day-to-day running of the club, even though the man controlling SEM and Kentaro, Jerome Anderson, is seen at many a Rovers game, home and away.
Is Mr. Anderson there just for the amazingly poor tactical football? Is he there to see one of the greatest clubs in English football self-destruct? Would he take responsibility for part of it? You can safely answer all three of those questions with a definitive “no!”. So, why is he there? Well, due to legal confinements now in place, silencing fans of the club from expressing themselves without factual evidence, it is for you to contemplate that yourself.
Steve Kean’s record speaks for itself. 44 games in charge at the time of writing, and Blackburn Rovers have lost 22 of them, drawing 11 and winning 11. The statistics don’t lie, and while many, including the League Managers Association (a group that represent managers in the English leagues), fellow SEM represented manager Owen Coyle, Tottenham Hotspur’s Harry Redknapp and Everton’s David Moyes, have voiced their support for Steve Kean, you can’t help but feel that these people have an ulterior motive for their blind support of an inept manager.
After all, when publicly supporting someone it adds assurance to their job, even if it is only slight. And if Kean continues to gain that support, with his record, Blackburn Rovers are guaranteed to take up one of those relegation spots, leaving two more left to fill.
Kean, on the other hand, will blame anything and anyone as long as it takes the spotlight away from his inability to manage a football team adequately. His taking over from Sam Allardyce, a man with Premier League pedigree and decades of experience in top-flight football, has been a huge failure, and has transformed the club from a mid-table European candidate, to bottom-of-the-barrell relegation contenders, odds on to go down, with Kean odds on to lose his job before anyone else.
He has been odds on favourite all season, but the man refuses to man-up and admit he has made mistake after mistake. His pre-and-post-match interviews frustrate thousands of Blackburn fans that have witnessed the embarrassing displays of football put before them as he proclaims the positives from each performance, making up his own statistics as he goes along. Mr. Kean clearly doesn’t understand what sort of club Blackburn is, and what he is destroying.
Anyone who has visited or lived in Blackburn will know that the town is heavily reliant on Blackburn Rovers Football Club and their ground, Ewood Park, for the local economy. Of course, the town is draped in history, but the sort of money Blackburn Rovers brings to the town and the local businesses is unchallenged by anything else. Without Blackburn Rovers, the town would fall into serious trouble, with many business owners losing their stalls and shops.
This has been understood by Jack Straw, the local Member of Parliament for Blackburn, a fan of the club, and former Lord High Chancellor of Great Britain and the Secretary of State for Justice. A man so well respected in this area, and across the countries that make up the United Kingdon.
When a politician that has been the political representative for the Blackburn community for almost 33 years sits up and takes notice of Venky’s incompetence in running of the club, you know there is a serious problem. He has voiced the supporters’ concern in a letter to the Venky’s, and the owners are advised to pay attention to it.
The fans finally cracked on Tuesday night, as Blackburn slumped to yet another embarrassing defeat – to fierce rivals Bolton Wanderers – to fall to the very bottom of the league. Their voices heard around the world as the game was televised across the globe, they chanted for the removal of Steve Kean and the Venky’s. Venky’s idea of using Blackburn Rovers as an advertising vehicle took another devastating blow.
How times change..
And it’s a missed opportunity, given Blackburn’s substantial Asian and Indian population. Their taking over at the club made economical sense.Ai??They could have opened a Venky’s Xpress, the first in the UK, within the stadium, offering food and drink to match-goers, opening seven days a week and fitting in perfectly on Bolton Road’s popular community of takeaways and restauraunts. But their experience has gone horribly wrong, and they’ve only themselves to blame.
The club still finds itself bare in staff behind the scenes, with no replacement coming in to replace John Williams, the former Chairman who resigned in February, citing differences in Venky’s way of running the club and his own. Williams had been at Blackburn Rovers for 14 years, appointed by Rovers legend Jack Walker, making the club the envy of many. Williams ran a tight ship and was up-front with the fans. When there was a problem, Williams would not shy away from the fans, telling them exactly what he thought.
He goes down in the books as one of the finest men to have graced the club, doing just as much as the likes of Alan Shearer, Colin Hendry, Simon Garner, Ronnie Clayton.Ai??And today, such men are dearly missed at a club that is run by men who couldn’t be further away from the supporters.
