Manchester City front-runners to sign Mathis Albert

Manchester City are leading the race to sign Borussia Dortmund winger Mathis Albert amidst interest from rivals Arsenal and Liverpool.

Manchester City have tracked Mathis Albert for several months and are the front-runners to sign the Borussia Dortmund winger. Arsenal and Liverpool are also monitoring the highly rated American teenager.

According to BILD via Sport Witness, City have been tracking the 17-year-old’s development and have already attempted to lure him to the Etihad Stadium during the January and summer transfer windows.

Although no formal offer has reached Dortmund, the Bundesliga club are aware of City’s persistent interest in their young attacker. Arsenal and Liverpool have also identified Albert as a potential target, but their chances of securing his signature are understood to be lower as per the report.

The reasons behind City’s advantage have not been specified, although their financial resources and established record of investing in young talent may provide them with a competitive advantage.

Albert’s time at Borussia Dortmund

Albert joined Dortmund in 2024 and broke into the first-team squad this summer. The winger has made three senior appearances so far, including two during the ongoing campaign, and is attracting attention for his considerable potential.

His reputation received a significant boost in September when he scored for the United States in a 4-2 victory over Chile. Aged 17 years, four months and eight days, Albert became the youngest goalscorer in the history of the US men’s national team, surpassing the previous record held by Christian Pulisic.

The achievement brought the teenager into the spotlight and intensified interest from some of Europe’s biggest clubs. Dortmund have a track record of identifying, developing, and selling young talent at premium valuations.

Jude Bellingham, Erling Haaland, Jadon Sancho and Ousmane Dembele are among the notable names to have followed that pathway, and Albert could become another valuable asset for the German club.

Premier League clubs are after Albert’s signature

Arsenal’s pursuit follows this summer’s departures of Leandro Trossard and Gabriel Martinelli, leaving the club short on the left flank. Albert may not be ready to become an immediate Premier League starter, but he could offer an option to develop over the longer term.

Liverpool, meanwhile, already have several options on the left, meaning a move would likely represent an investment for the future. City also possess considerable attacking depth, but their willingness to recruit young players with significant potential could make them an attractive destination. Dortmund’s valuation will likely determine whether City can secure Albert’s signature in the near future.
