Virgil van Dijk has emerged as a target for two European heavyweights amid uncertainties surrounding his long-term future at Liverpool.
According to a report by Fichajes, Jose Mourinho is considering a move for Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk as Real Madrid assess defensive options ahead of the January transfer window. The 35-year-old remains under contract at Anfield until June 2027, but uncertainty surrounding his longer-term future could create an opportunity for the Spanish giants.
The report comes alongside renewed interest from AC Milan, with Football Italia citing journalist Carlo Pellegatti’s continued belief that van Dijk could eventually move to San Siro.
Mourinho sees experience as a potential solution
Real Madrid already have considerable depth at centre-back, with Antonio Rudiger, Dean Huijsen, and Ibrahima Konate among their options. Yet Mourinho appears keen to add greater experience to the group. Defensive lapses during the early part of the campaign have reportedly encouraged the Portuguese coach to examine alternatives, particularly after concerns over concentration and mistakes during build-up play.
Additionally, Rudiger has entered the final 12 of his contract. So, van Dijk would represent a very different proposition from the younger defenders in Real Madrid’s squad. The Dutchman’s positioning, aerial strength and ability to organise a defensive line could provide Mourinho with another experienced leader.
Liverpool currently have van Dijk tied down until 2027, and negotiations over another extension have been postponed. If that situation remains unresolved, January could become an important point in determining his future.
AC Milan refuse to disappear from the picture
AC Milan’s long-standing interest has a longer-running storyline and according to Football Italia, Pellegatti maintains that van Dijk could eventually arrive at San Siro after previously suggesting the Dutchman had been open to the possibility of joining the Rossoneri.
His contract situation remains central to that speculation. A January move would require Liverpool to agree to a transfer, while waiting until next summer could open the possibility of the Dutchman leaving as a free agent if no new agreement is reached.
Meanwhile, van Dijk to Real Madrid would be fascinating, but the football logic depends heavily on what Mourinho wants from his defence. The Dutchman is no longer the explosive centre-back who dominated Premier League attacks several years ago, yet his reading of the game, passing range and leadership remain valuable qualities.
In a Mourinho team, those characteristics could be particularly useful because the manager has traditionally placed enormous importance on defensive organisation and experienced decision-makers.
The bigger issue is whether Real Madrid should commit significant money to a 35-year-old when they already possess younger options. Milan presents a different proposition, especially if van Dijk reaches free agency. For Liverpool, the decision may ultimately come down to whether his experience outweighs the need to plan for the next defensive era.
