Newcastle United told to pay at least £52 million to sign Nico Gonzalez

Newcastle United may have to pay around £52 million to sign midfield target Nico Gonzalez, with the Spaniard’s departure from Manchester City increasingly likely.

According to Football Insider, Manchester City want to recoup the amount they invested when Gonzalez joined from FC Porto in January 2025. Gonzalez would add the physicality and energy that Newcastle’s midfield has lacked since Sandro Tonali and Guimaraes’s exits, making him a tactical fit for the Magpies despite his limited playing time at the Etihad.

Reports also suggest that Manchester City are prepared to sell him. The midfielder was an unused substitute in City’s late victory over Bournemouth on Sunday and could now be on his way out of the club. Newcastle have recently focused on Gonzalez as they look to strengthen their midfield during the latter stages of the transfer window.

Manchester City set Nico Gonzalez price

According to Football Insider, Manchester City want at least £52 million for the Spanish midfielder. That figure would allow them to recoup the amount they invested when Gonzalez joined from Porto in January 2025. Newcastle’s willingness to meet the £52 million valuation will determine whether talks progress.

Manchester City were reportedly reluctant to sell Gonzalez recently, but that stance depended on them signing new midfielders before the deadline. The club have since agreed a deal for Ayyoub Bouaddi, as reported by David Ornstein, which could pave the way for Gonzalez to leave.

City could also intensify their efforts to sign Enzo Fernandez, although a deal for the Chelsea midfielder would be difficult to complete at this stage. At present, there is no indication that negotiations are close to being concluded. However, Newcastle have made contact over the midfielder, and further movement could follow.

The Magpies may first need to convince Gonzalez to join before opening detailed negotiations with Manchester City over the transfer fee. If they are prepared to meet the reported £52 million valuation, the deal could progress quickly.

Gonzalez suits Newcastle United

Gonzalez has not established himself as a regular starter since joining Manchester City, but he has demonstrated his ability on several occasions. He has made 41 appearances for City and could benefit from playing more regularly at Newcastle. The Spaniard would add physicality, energy and technical quality to the Magpies’ midfield. Regular first-team football could also help him reach his full potential.

Manchester City have reportedly informed Gonzalez that he can leave before the transfer deadline, while Newcastle remain interested in signing him. The expected arrival of Bouaddi could further reduce his chances of regular football at the Etihad. A move to St. James’ Park could therefore suit all parties, provided Newcastle are willing to meet City’s valuation and Gonzalez agrees to the transfer.
