Arsenal step up interest in Nico Williams amid Barcelona threat

Arsenal are ready to step up their interest in Nico Williams amid Barcelona’s threat, as Mikel Arteta eyes the Spaniard for his attacking setup.

Nico Williams could once again become one of the headline makers in the transfer market despite his longer-term deal with Athletic Club. As per Team Talk, Arsenal are the team ready to step up their interest in the Spanish winger, with Barcelona still keeping tabs on his situation.

Nico Williams set the headlines rolling last summer as Barcelona made another attempt to sign him. With the saga dragging along, Athletic Club announced a new deal for the winger until 2035, considered one of the longest contracts in the game, as the Catalans had to move away.

The Catalans continue to keep tabs on his situation amid reports that Athletic Club could sell Williams in the summer. Barcelona remain interested, despite an increased release clause than last summer, which, owing to his new deal, is in the region of €90 million. However, they are not prioritising a new left winger at the cost that Williams will prove to be, as they are focused on signing a defender and a striker.

This could let Arsenal make their move, as the Gunners have thought about a summer move for Williams. Now, Mikel Arteta’s side is ready to step up their interest in the Spanish winger, amid suggestions that the manager wants a new left-sided attacker in his system.

Williams has been a long-term target for Arsenal, and this could be the summer when they manage to bring him to the Emirates. There are other clubs in the mix amid reports of Manchester United’s interest in the 23-year-old La Liga speedster, while more suitors could come on board once Athletic Club make their intentions clear.

Why are Arsenal interested in Nico Williams?

Arsenal made numerous signings last summer but did not sign a new left winger, as the futures of Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard could be in doubt. Anthony Gordon is a player linked with a move to the Emirates, while the Gunners are looking at several other names, including Williams.

There could be a starting spot in the current team for a new left winger, and should Williams make the move, it will be a huge statement of intent from the Gunners. For now, it is yet to be clear if they are willing to push towards opening discussions with Athletic Club, but that could be the way forward.
