Premier League giants Manchester City are reportedly mulling over a surprise move for 33-year-old Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen.
According to a report by Spanish outlet Fichajes, Marc-Andre ter Stegen is the subject of interest from Manchester City. The Citizens are keen on reinforcing their goalkeeping unit by signing a top-class shot-stopper in the summer transfer window. So, the Barcelona captain has emerged as a target for the Premier League club.
However, Manchester City’s interest in the 11-season Barcelona veteran is shocking, considering his age profile and inconsistent performances. However, the decision-makers at the Premier League club value his qualities, including his “confidence in aerial balls, his ability to initiate play from the back, and his leadership in the dressing room”.
Marc-Andre ter Stegen and his Barcelona career
Marc-Andre ter Stegen has endured a topsy-turvy ride since joining Barcelona from Borussia Monchengladbach in July 2014. While the 33-year-old has enjoyed phases when he has been one of the best goalkeepers in the world, he has also been error-prone for many parts of his stint with the Blaugrana.
The German international has come under fire for his error-strewn displays, and Barcelona fans have been clamouring for a long-term replacement. That may materialise, with Barcelona among the clubs vying for Joan Garcia’s signature heading into the summer transfer window. Meanwhile, ter Stegen may have a top-class suitor, with Manchester City keen on signing him.
Premier League adventure beckoning?
Manchester City’s interest in Marc-Andre ter Stegen is perplexing. The Citizens are scouring the market for a goalkeeper heading into the summer transfer window amid uncertainties around Ederson Moraes’s long-term future. Widespread reports have linked the Brazilian international with a move to the Saudi Pro League.
In addition, Stefan Ortega has yet to be convincing enough to become the undisputed first-choice goalkeeper for Manchester City. So, the Premier League club must sign a new shot-stopper in the summer transfer window. However, the 11-year Barcelona veteran is not the ideal profile for Manchester City.
While the 33-year-old German international was once among the best goalkeepers in the world, that was long ago. Instead, Manchester City should focus on signing a top-class stopper who can serve the club for a decade.
