Chelsea, Manchester United, and Manchester City are reportedly interested in signing 25-year-old Portuguese goalkeeper Diogo Costa in the summer transfer window.
According to a report by TEAMtalk, Diogo Costa is the subject of interest from Chelsea. The Blues are scouring the market for a goalkeeper heading into the summer transfer window and have set their sights on the FC Porto mainstay. Meanwhile, Manchester City and Manchester United are also keen on signing the Portuguese international, who has a release clause worth €75 million in his contract with the Primeira Liga giants.
The rapid rise of Diogo Costa
Diogo Costa has established himself as one of the best goalkeepers in the world in the last few years. The player has not looked back since establishing a foothold in the first-team squad at FC Porto, becoming a mainstay between the sticks for his club and country.
The 25-year-old has turned out nearly 200 times thus far for FC Porto while keeping 82 clean sheets and conceding 173 goals. Meanwhile, Costa’s progress has not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of several high-profile clubs across Europe. Premier League bigwigs, in particular, are keen on signing him, with Chelsea, Manchester City, and Manchester United vying for his signature.
A man in demand
The Portuguese international has been on Chelsea’s radar for a long time. The continued interest is understandable, even though the Blues have spent considerable sums on goalkeepers in the last few years. With Robert Sanchez and Filip Jorgensen blowing hot and cold, Chelsea can do with a top-class shot-stopper, with Costa emerging as a viable target.
Meanwhile, Manchester United’s interest in Diogo Costa is surprising despite Andre Onana’s hit-and-miss displays since arriving from Inter Milan. While the Cameroonian international has been error-prone in the last two years, other areas require more attention. Nevertheless, Costa is a target for Manchester United.
As for Manchester City, Ederson Moraes might depart from the Etihad in the summer transfer window. In addition, Stefan Ortega has not earned Pep Guardiola’s trust to become the first-choice goalkeeper for Manchester City. So, Costa is an option worth considering. Meanwhile, the FC Porto stopper has a release clause worth €75 million in his contract with the Primeira Liga club.
Chelsea, Manchester City, and Manchester United should have the funds to afford a deal worth €75 million in the summer transfer window. However, it is unclear if the three clubs are ready to trigger the release clause to sign the 25-year-old Portuguese international amid the need to bolster other positions.
