Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund are reportedly keen on sealing another loan move for Carney Chukwuemeka in the summer transfer window.
According to a report by Sky Deutschland, Borussia Dortmund will aim to keep Carney Chukwuemeka at Signal Iduna Park beyond the summer transfer window. The Bundesliga giants have a purchase option worth €35 million to seal a permanent move for the Chelsea misfit. However, the Black and Yellows want another loan deal for the English midfielder, as paying €35 million is beyond their means.
Carney Chukwuemeka and Chelsea woes
Carney Chukwuemeka was among the best young midfield prospects in the Premier League when he joined Chelsea from Aston Villa in August 2022. The West London club beat tremendous competition to sign the Englishman. However, fitness issues plagued him in his first two seasons at Stamford Bridge before the stacked midfield unit made him a peripheral figure.
The 21-year-old barely featured in the first half of the 2024/25 season before Chelsea loaned him to Borussia Dortmund in the winter transfer window. However, Chukwuemeka’s struggles have continued at the Bundesliga club, as he has managed only 231 minutes of game time across nine appearances in all competitions while chipping in with one goal.
Considering the English midfielder snubbed several Premier League clubs to join Borussia Dortmund, the move has been a colossal failure thus far. However, the Bundesliga giants are keen on keeping Chukwuemeka at Signal Iduna Park beyond the summer transfer window.
What next?
Borussia Dortmund’s interest in keeping Carney Chukwuemeka is surprising. Niko Kovac has a stacked midfield unit at the Bundesliga club, with Pascal Gross and Marcel Sabitzer making their mark in the middle of the park. Nevertheless, the Chelsea misfit remains in the Black and Yellows’ plans for the 2025/26 season.
However, the Bundesliga giants do not want to trigger the purchase option worth €35 million to seal a permanent deal in the summer transfer window as that is beyond their budget. Instead, Borussia Dortmund will pursue another loan move for the 21-year-old Englishman.
However, it is unclear if Chelsea will accept another loan move for Chukwuemeka, considering they reportedly want to seal a permanent exit in the summer transfer window. So, it will be interesting to see what the future has in store for the young English midfielder.
