Manchester United will reportedly pursue 29-year-old French international Mike Maignan to replace Andre Onana in the summer transfer window.
According to a report by Spanish outlet Fichajes, Mike Maignan is the subject of interest from Manchester United. The Red Devils are scouring the market for a goalkeeper heading into the summer transfer window amid Andre Onana’s inconsistencies. So, the 29-year-old AC Milan shot-stopper has emerged as a target for the Premier League.
The rise and rise of Mike Maignan
Mike Maignan has established himself as one of the best goalkeepers in Serie A since joining AC Milan from LOSC Lille in July 2021. A native of Cayenne, the Frenchman spent his formative years in France, starting his youth career at Villiers le Bel JS before graduating from the academy at Paris Saint-Germain. However, he rose in prominence during his spell with Lille before moving to AC Milan.
The 29-year-old has come leaps and bounds in the last three and a half years, having been a bright spot for the Rossoneri amid the Serie A club’s frustratingly inconsistent period. Maignan has turned out nearly 150 times thus far for AC Milan while keeping 55 clean sheets and conceding 155 goals.
Meanwhile, Maignan’s progress has not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of several high-profile clubs across Europe. Premier League bigwigs, in particular, have been keen on signing the French international, with Manchester United among the prospective suitors vying for his signature heading into the summer transfer window.
Premier League adventure beckoning?
Manchester United hold a long-standing interest in Mike Maignan. The continued interest in the AC Milan goalkeeper is understandable, considering Andre Onana has blown hot and cold since arriving from Inter Milan 18 months ago. In addition, Altay Bayindir will unlikely become the first-choice stopper for Manchester United despite his recent heroics.
So, several candidates, including Diogo Costa, have emerged on Manchester United’s radar, with Maignan also a viable target. The 29-year-old Frenchman has the experience and quality to immediately become an asset for the Premier League heavyweights.
In addition, with Maignan entering the final 18 months of his contract with AC Milan, a cut-price deal might be on the cards. It will be interesting to see if the French international joins Manchester United in the summer transfer window.
