LOSC Lille striker Jonathan David and his entourage have reportedly advanced talks with Barcelona amid his links with Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur.
According to a report by Graeme Bailey on TBR Football, Jonathan David is the subject of interest from Barcelona. Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur have also been keen on signing the LOSC Lille striker. However, the Canadian international has advanced his talks with the Catalan outfit over a Bosman move in the summer transfer window.
The rise and rise of Jonathan David
Jonathan David has been one of the best young strikers in the world in the last half a dozen years. The 25-year-old has been in the spotlight since joining LOSC Lille from KAA Gent in August 2020, going from strength to strength with each passing season at Stade Pierre-Mauroy.
David has been excellent thus far this term, contributing to 29 goals in 34 appearances across all competitions by finding the back of the net 20 times and providing nine assists. However, the former KAA Gent striker’s long-term future at the Ligue 1 club is uncertain after entering the final six months of his contract with LOSC Lille. The situation has piqued the attention of European bigwigs like Barcelona, Manchester United, and Tottenham.
A man in demand
Manchester United can do with a striker in the summer transfer window amid Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee’s struggles in the final third this season. In addition, recent reports have claimed that the former might be on the chopping block at Old Trafford. So, David has emerged as a viable target for Manchester United.
Meanwhile, Tottenham Hotspur’s interest in Jonathan David is understandable. While Dominic Solanke is a long-term solution, an injury crisis has exposed the North London club’s need for more offensive reinforcement. Mathys Tel might be an option this summer if he completes a permanent move to Tottenham. However, David is also an option worth considering.
As for Barcelona, Robert Lewandowski is in the twilight of his career, and he has blown hot and cold this season despite his high output. So, Barcelona can do with an alternative to the veteran Polish striker, with David emerging as a viable target. The latest update has suggested that the two parties have advanced talks over a Bosman move.
David’s preference for Barcelona makes sense, considering the Blaugrana will offer UEFA Champions League football next season. On the other hand, Manchester United and Tottenham might not play in Europe. So, the two Premier League clubs might miss out on the 25-year-old Canadian striker’s signature.
