Tottenham backed to return for Marc Guehi in the summer

Tottenham are expected to return with a fresh offer for Marc Guehi in the summer, when they could have a more favourable run at the defender.

According to Football Insider, Tottenham are still interested in Marc Guehi and expected to return with a fresh offer in the summer. The Crystal Palace defender was never likely to leave in January, and Spurs are keen on the England international as the summer window will likely have a more favourable pathway towards the defender, not only for them but also for key rivals.

The Marc Guehi saga did not have much to it during the January window despite plenty of claims beforehand that many clubs would target the defender again. Newcastle United made headlines in the summer when they made four bids for the defender, only for Crystal Palace to reject each one.

Come to the January window, Crystal Palace suffered an early blow as Chelsea recalled Trevoh Chalobah from his loan at Selhurst Park. Additionally, Chadi Riad’s season-ending injury also played a role in their thinking about Guehi’s future, as the Eagles were unlikely to entertain any bids for the defender.

Totenham failed with a late bid worth a reported £70 million, with the reasoning for that posited at the lateness of the move. In theory, Palace were unlikely to sell him given that they only have Chris Richards and Maxence Lacroix as their other central defenders.

Spurs are expected to return with a fresh offer in the summer in their efforts to land Marc Guehi. Tottenham have endured a difficult period with defensive injuries, as they have also lost Radu Dragusin for a long time with an ACL injury. Hence, the need to bring in a top-draw central defender was high on their agenda despite landing Kevin Danso from RC Lens.

Tottenham will face competition for Marc Guehi

Spurs are far from qualifying for European competition next season, let alone the Champions League, as that could adversely affect their chase of Guehi. Arsenal and Liverpool are said to be keen on the defender, while Chelsea have also kept regular tabs on the £70 million-rated man.

Guehi might have ruled out a move himself in January, but as he enters the final year of his deal at Selhurst Park, there’s a feeling he will depart. Plenty of top clubs, including many from the Champions League, would target a move for the Palace man, meaning Tottenham may have to be too aggressive in this chase to stand a chance to sign their top defensive target in the summer.
