Manchester City will continue pursuing a late move for 23-year-old Spanish midfielder Nico Gonzalez despite failing with a bid worth €50 million.
According to a report by O Jogo, as relayed by Sport Witness, Nico Gonzalez remains the subject of interest from Manchester City over a late move in the winter transfer window. The Premier League champions have failed with a bid worth €50 million to sign the FC Porto midfielder, with the Portuguese giants demanding around €60 million to part ways with the Spaniard this month.
Despite the failed bid, the Citizens are not giving up, and they will likely return with an improved offer to sign the Spanish midfielder. O Jogo has claimed that Manchester City might return with an offer of around €60 million. Meanwhile, Gonzalez is excited by the prospect of joining Manchester City, although FC Porto will resist a winter sale.
Nico Gonzalez and his growth at FC Porto
Nico Gonzalez has found a stable footing since joining FC Porto from Barcelona in July 2023. The 23-year-old could not become an undisputed first-choice starter for the Blaugrana but has been exceptional thus far for FC Porto. The youngster has added new facets to his game, adding productivity in the final third.
The Spaniard has contributed to 13 goals in 29 appearances across all competitions thus far, finding the back of the net seven times and providing six assists. Meanwhile, Gonzalez’s progress has not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of several well-known clubs across Europe, including Manchester City.
Premier League move on the horizon?
Manchester City’s interest in Nico Gonzalez makes sense. The Premier League champions have been scouring the market for a holding midfielder since losing Rodri to a long-term knee injury. So, the FC Porto prospect has emerged as a viable target for Manchester City.
The Citizens have already failed with a bid to sign the 23-year-old Spaniard, offering €50 million to sign him from FC Porto. The Portuguese giants want around €60 million to part ways with the young midfielder, although they are resisting a winter sale.
Manchester City’s failure to sign Gonzalez for €50 million has not deterred them, with the Premier League champions considering “upping the ante” to reach €60 million. With the Spanish midfielder excited by the prospect of playing under Pep Guardiola, a late move might be on the cards.
