Chelsea, Manchester City reach impasse in Nico O’Reilly talks

Chelsea and Manchester City have seen talks stall for young prospect Nico O’Reilly following disagreements over terms offered.

According to the Manchester Evening News, Chelsea are unlikely to succeed in signing Nico O’Reilly after talks with Manchester City hit an impasse. The two clubs have been unable to agree on terms of the transfer, meaning the 19-year-old wonderkid is set to continue with the Manchester-based club for the time being.

Nico O’Reilly is one of the most promising talents coming through the Manchester City academy as he is looking to make a name for himself. The 19-year-old wonderkid is at an age where he would be seeking a project that allows him regular game time and flourish in his career.

Given the plethora of talent and senior players in the Manchester City squad, it is a difficult prospect to find a pathway into the first team. He did feature in the FA Cup win over Salford and scored his first senior goal in that game. However, the likelihood of the young talent featuring again in one of the Premier League or Champions League is remote.

Chelsea had approached Manchester City for O’Reilly, and City had shown an inclination to talk business with the talented player. The 19-year-old prodigy would have been given a more prominent role at Stamford Bridge to aid his development, although talks between the two clubs have hit a snag.

Chelsea and Manchester City reach an impasse over Nico O’Reilly

Chelsea signed Cole Palmer two summers ago, and that has had an adverse change of thinking on Manchester City’s part. While the West Londoners paid a hefty sum to land the England international, they did not allow Manchester City to include any sell-on clause or a buy-back option in the contract.

In the case of Nico O’Reilly, the impasse between the two clubs is due to Chelsea’s reluctance to include a buy-back clause that Manchester City have eagerly wanted. Hence, the two clubs are unlikely to resume talks for the teenage whizkid, as the player is set to remain at the Etihad.

O’Reilly will likely get another opportunity to impress Guardiola with his game when Manchester City take on Leyton Orient in the next FA Cup round. However, he is unlikely to feature in any Premier League or Champions League games.
