West Ham United wanted Jordan Henderson as AS Monaco move nears

West Ham United and Wolverhampton Wanderers have reportedly been keen on signing former Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson from Ajax in the winter transfer window.

According to a report by Graeme Bailey on TBR Football, Jordan Henderson has been the subject of interest from West Ham United. The Hammers have been scouring the market for a midfielder heading into the winter transfer window, with the former Liverpool captain emerging as a target. However, the Ajax midfielder is closing in on joining AS Monaco this month.

Jordan Henderson and his recent rollercoaster ride

Jordan Henderson has endured a topsy-turvy ride since leaving Liverpool 18 months ago. The Englishman spent a dozen years with the Merseyside outfit after arriving from Sunderland, enjoying a trophy-laden stint under Jurgen Klopp, including the elusive Premier League crown in the 2019/20 season. However, he surprised many when he moved to Saudi Arabia by joining Al-Ettifaq in July 2023.

The spell with the Saudi Pro League club did not last long, and the veteran midfielder returned to Europe six months later, joining Ajax in January 2024. The 34-year-old has enjoyed a solid stint with the Eredivisie giants, having been a mainstay in the middle of the park throughout his time at the club.

Henderson has turned out nearly 50 times thus far for Ajax, chipping in with eight assists while serving the Dutch club as the captain. However, AS Monaco’s emergence as a suitor has turned the English midfielder’s head, and he wants to join the Ligue 1 outfit before the winter transfer window shuts down, although West Ham United also wanted to secure his services.

What next?

West Ham United’s interest in Jordan Henderson is a tad bit surprising yet understandable. While the veteran midfielder is on the wrong side of 30 and in the twilight of his glittering career, his vast experience would have helped the Hammers during their transition under Graham Potter.

In addition, the 34-year-old Englishman would have brought his impeccable leadership to the table. However, Henderson is closing in on joining Ligue 1 club AS Monaco, forcing West Ham to look elsewhere for a new midfielder. The Hammers have also recently failed with a bid to sign Kristjan Asllani from Inter Milan.

Recent reports have linked West Ham with other midfielders, including Nicolo Fagioli. So, it will be interesting to see who becomes the top target for the East London club after the failed move for former Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson.
