Chelsea, Manchester United vying for Gregor Kobel

Chelsea and Manchester United are reportedly interested in signing 27-year-old Swiss goalkeeper Gregor Kobel from Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund in the summer.

According to a report by The Independent, Gregor Kobel might be “in demand” in the summer transfer window. Chelsea and Manchester United are keen on signing the Borussia Dortmund goalkeeper amid concerns about the viability of Robert Sanchez and Andre Onana due to their error-strewn displays in the 2024/25 season.

The rise of Gregor Kobel as a force in the Bundesliga

Gregor Kobel has been one of the best goalkeepers in the Bundesliga since joining Borussia Dortmund from VfB Stuttgart in July 2021. A native of Zurich, he spent most of his formative years in his hometown but graduated from the youth division at TSG Hoffenheim.

However, the experienced goalkeeper had to wait until he joined Borussia Dortmund to find a stable footing in his career. The 27-year-old has turned out nearly 150 times thus far for the Black and Yellows while keeping 46 clean sheets and conceding 187 goals.

Meanwhile, Kobel’s progress has not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of several high-profile clubs across Europe. Premier League bigwigs, in particular, are keen on signing the Swiss international, with Chelsea and Manchester United among his prospective suitors ahead of the summer transfer window.

Premier League adventure beckoning?

Gregor Kobel has been on Chelsea’s radar for a long time. The continued interest makes sense, considering Robert Sanchez has blown hot and cold since joining the West London club from Brighton & Hove Albion, recently drawing the ire of Manchester United legend Gary Neville. While the Blues have a stacked goalkeeping unit, Kobel will be a top-notch addition to the squad.

As for Manchester United, Andre Onana has produced many error-strewn performances since arriving from Inter Milan 18 months ago. Meanwhile, Altay Bayindir has not done enough to become the undisputed first-choice goalkeeper for Manchester United. So, Kobel has emerged as a viable target for the Red Devils.

The report has suggested that the 27-year-old Swiss international will be high “in demand” in the summer transfer window. It will be interesting to see if an adventure in the Premier League is on the cards for the Borussia Dortmund goalkeeper amid his links with Chelsea and Manchester United.
