Chelsea are closely monitoring Bayer Leverkusen defensive sensation Jeremie Frimpong ahead of a potential transfer.

Chelsea have spent a fortune on player transfers in recent seasons. The Blues have some of the best young players in their squad but Enzo Maresca is still not satisfied with the options that he has in some areas of the pitch.

The Italian manager seeks more depth and quality in a few areas. He is keen on bringing in a new top-level right-back and according to a report from TBR, the London club are keeping a close eye on Bayer Leverkusen star Jeremie Frimpong.

Things might not have worked out for Frimpong at Manchester City. But he managed to get things back on track at Celtic and hasn’t looked back since joining the German club at the start of 2021. He has gone from strength to strength with every passing season.

The 23-year-old Dutch international seems to have taken his game to another level under the leadership of Xabi Alonso. He did wonders for them last season as they ended Bayern Munich’s dominance in the Bundesliga and lifted the league title without losing a game all season.

Chelsea need a new right-back

While he still has four years left on his deal, his impressive work has resulted in interest from across Europe. Multiple top clubs are keen on signing Frimpong and Chelsea have emerged as a potential destination for the youngster.

The Blues do have Malo Gusto and Reece James in their squad but Marseca still feels the lack of depth as their skipper has been struggling to stay fit and is yet to feature in the ongoing season. Gusto has been the go-to man for now but he was sidelined in their last outing and they ended up using Axel Disasi out wide on the flank.

Marseca wants a new right-sided full-back and the Blues are in the market to sign one in the winter. They are interested in the Leverkusen full-back and could look to knock on the German club’s door for his signature. But, they won’t find it easy to sign him mid-season as he is a key part of Alonso’s first-team setup.
