Real Sociedad initiate discussions to sign Sergio Gomez

Manchester City defender Sergio Gomez has been linked with a move away from the club heading into the summer transfer window.

According to Fabrizio Romano, La Liga club Real Sociedad have now opened talks with Premier League champions Manchester City to sign 23-year-old out-of-favour defender Sergio Gomez.

Gomez has not been a useful player for Manchester City, and it remains to be seen whether the Premier League champions are willing to sell him. They are lacking in depth when it comes to the left-back department, and selling Gomez might not be a wise decision without bringing in a replacement first.

Manchester City must look to invest in a left-back this summer. Meanwhile, Real Sociedad need defensive additions this summer, and Gomez would be a quality option for them. Kieran Tierney, whose future remains uncertain, will return to his parent club Arsenal, and he will need to be replaced.

Joining the Spanish club would allow the 23-year-old to play regularly and establish himself as a reliable performer in the Spanish top flight. Joining them would boost his chances of playing regularly for his country as well.

There is no doubt that Manchester City have the financial muscle to sign top quality players, and it remains to be seen whether they can bring in a quality replacement for Gomez before letting him leave.

Real Sociedad could use Sergio Gomez

Real Sociedad will be hoping to agree on a reasonable fee for the 23-year-old, and it remains to be seen how the situation develops. Gomez is a talented young defender with a lot of potential.

He could develop into a key player for the Spanish outfit in the coming seasons. Gomez is still only 23 and he is likely to improve with coaching and experience. If Real Sociedad can sign him for a reasonable price this summer, the transfer could look like a major bargain in the long term.

Manchester City managed to win the league title this past season, but they will be disappointed to have crashed out of the UEFA Champions League. They will look to win the European competition next season and they need more quality and depth in the side.

Improving their defensive unit should be one of their priorities. They should look to get rid of they are fringe players and tighten up at the back during the summer transfer window. Selling Gomez, and bringing in an upgrade could prove to be a wise decision.
