Bayer Leverkusen rival Barcelona in Guido Rodriguez chase

2023/24 Bundesliga winners Bayer Leverkusen will reportedly compete with Barcelona for 30-year-old Real Betis midfielder this summer.

According to a report by TyC Sports, as relayed by SPORT, Guido Rodriguez is the subject of interest from Bayer Leverkusen. The 2023/24 Bundesliga winners are keen on signing a holding midfielder in the summer transfer window. Meanwhile, the 30-year-old Real Betis midfielder is also a target for Barcelona.

Guido Rodriguez and his La Liga journey

Guido Rodriguez has been one of the best midfielders in La Liga since joining Real Betis from Club America in January 2020. The Argentine international has not been an undisputed starter for La Albiceleste but was a part of the squad that won the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

However, Rodriguez has been a pivotal figure for Real Betis in the last four and a half years. The experienced midfielder has turned out 173 times thus far for Los Verdiblancos, chipping in with nine goals and four assists. However, the 30-year-old will leave the Andalusian outfit as a free agent in the summer transfer window.

Guido Rodriguez’s impending free-agent status has not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of several high-profile clubs across Europe. The 2022 FIFA World Cup winner has been a long-term target for Barcelona. However, the Catalan giants face stiff competition from Bayer Leverkusen heading into the summer transfer window.

A new competitor for Barcelona?

Barcelona’s interest in Guido Rodriguez is hardly surprising. The Catalan giants are desperate to sign a top-class holding midfielder due to the gaping hole that Sergio Busquets created with his departure. The 30-year-old Argentine international has thus emerged as a viable target for the Blaugrana.

As for Bayer Leverkusen, they will delve into the market for a new midfielder heading into the summer transfer window. The 2023/24 Bundesliga winners have shown interest in Aleix Garcia. However, Rodriguez is also an option worth considering due to his experience and winning mentality.

With Bayer Leverkusen joining the race to sign Rodriguez, Barcelona cannot afford to slip-up. It will be interesting to see if the 2023/24 Bundesliga winners can beat the Blaugrana to the signature of the 30-year-old World Cup winner in the summer transfer window.
