Real Madrid dreaming of signing Rodri from Manchester City

La Liga champions Real Madrid reportedly dream of signing 27-year-old Manchester City midfield mainstay Rodri.

According to a report by AS, as relayed by Sport Witness, Rodri is the subject of interest from Real Madrid. The Merengues are scouring the market for a long-term successor to Toni Kroos, who will retire from football this summer. The 27-year-old Manchester City midfield mainstay has thus emerged as a viable target for Los Blancos.

The rise and rise of Rodri

Rodri has established himself as one of the best players in the world since joining Manchester City from Atletico Madrid in July 2019. A native of Madrid, the Spaniard spent his formative years in his homeland, representing Atletico Madrid before graduating from the Villarreal youth division. He returned to Atletico Madrid in 2018 before moving to England a year later.

The 27-year-old has been a mainstay in the middle of the park for Manchester City in the last half a decade and is arguably the most crucial member of Pep Guardiola’s squad. The player has turned out over 250 times thus far for Manchester City, chipping in with 26 goals and 30 assists.

Meanwhile, Rodri’s progress at Manchester City has not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of several well-known outfits. The Spanish international has now emerged as a dream target for Real Madrid, with Los Blancos eager to sign a long-term successor to Toni Kroos.

Real Madrid interested

Real Madrid will part ways with Toni Kroos in the summer transfer window after the German international announced his impending retirement. Kroos has only two more games left to play as a Real Madrid player, while UEFA Euro 2024 will bring his final appearances for Germany on the international stage.

So, it is hardly surprising that the Merengues are scouring the market for a midfielder heading into the summer transfer window. Joshua Kimmich and Rodri have thus emerged as the dream targets for Real Madrid. However, a move for the latter is improbable, with Manchester City considering him “untouchable”.

Rodri’s stature at Manchester City means he will not return to Spain anytime soon, forcing Real Madrid to look elsewhere for midfield reinforcement. It will be interesting to see who fills Kroos’s void at the Santiago Bernabeu, with Kimmich among the targets.
