Borussia Dortmund formulating offer to sign Ian Maatsen

Borussia Dortmund are set to accelerate their efforts to sign Ian Maatsen, with the left-back keen on the switch.

According to Patrick Berger, Borussia Dortmund are formulating an offer to sign Ian Maatsen as quickly as possible. The Bundesliga giants will open talks after the Champions League final and will try to get Chelsea to reduce their €35 million asking price for their  academy graduate.

Borussia Dortmund to make Ian Maatsen offer?

Borussia Dortmund’s season is about to end once they play the Champions League final against Real Madrid. After the big Wembley showdown, the club will have critical decisions to make ahead of the summer, and one of those involves the transfer of Ian Maatsen.

The €35 million-rated Chelsea academy graduate joined BVB on loan during the January window and has since become a key member of Edin Terzic’s side. Meanwhile, Maatsen is keen to leave Chelsea in the summer as he feels there’s no place for him in the project at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea are reportedly holding out for the €35 million release clause in Maatsen’s contract, although Borussia Dortmund will hold talks to try to reduce it with the Premier League giants. As things stand, the Black and Yellows are keen on landing the Dutchman as quickly as possible and see him as their first signing of the summer.

Maatsen’s desire to make the move permanent will also play a huge part in proceedings and probably make BVB’s job easier. Considering how big a future Maatsen could have, even €35 million would feel like a decent fee, although the Bundesliga giants are not known to pay big for players.

Chelsea to sell academy stars

Chelsea may have escaped the pressure of PSR obligations by selling some of their assets. But they might still want more room on their transfer budget by selling some of their academy graduates. Maatsen, being one, could probably offload the likes of Trevoh Chalobah, Armando Broja, and Conor Gallagher.

The latter has been one of their top performers this season, but his contractual situation could force Chelsea to decide his future. There are some keen sides eager to take Gallagher, and the eyes will be on Chelsea and their transfer decisions.
