Borussia Dortmund set to hold talks with Chelsea for Ian Maatsen

Borussia Dortmund are ready to open talks with Chelsea over the future of versatile star Ian Maatsen, who has impressed on loan.

According to Fabrizio Romano on Caught Offside, Borussia Dortmund are set to hold talks with Chelsea to determine the future of Ian Maatsen. The £35 million-rated prospect has impressed while on loan at the Westfalenstadion, with the club now keen to see how far they can go in convincing the Blues about a move.

Dortumud to hold Ian Maatsen talks

Borussia Dortmund secured fifth place in the Bundesliga, securing them in the Champions League football next season. The club are also close to making it to this edition’s final after their first-leg wins over PSG. Hence, they might have some clarity on their finances for next term, which has triggered the idea of opening talks for some on-loan players like Jadon Sancho and Ian Madsen.

The latter joined from Chelsea in the January window and has recently impressed as a left-back for Edin Terzic’s side. He has been instrumental in helping Dortmund with their attacking style. Early reports stated Maatsen wanted a permanent move to the club after his move there.

However, things are more complex from the financial standpoint, as Chelsea are demanding a strong fee to sell their homegrown star, which may put a permanent move in some doubt. Now, Maatsen does have a long-term prospect, with the £35 million-rated star likely to prove a good investment for a club looking to make the addition.

Fabrizio Romano insists Dortmund will open talks with Chelsea about the future of Maatsen beyond the current season. There needs to be clarity on what they want, although the Blues are looking to sell him on a permanent basis.

Romano said, “It’s really important news for Borussia Dortmund. Why? Obviously they have the importance of Champions League but also the fresh money from the competition so that they can really attack their two main target.”

“The first one is to keep Jadon Sancho. It won’t be easy, but Dortmund will meet with Manchester United to find a solution. So let’s see what’s going to happen.

“And then Ian Maatsen. The player is really happy and he has a £35m release clause in his Chelsea contract. Conversations will take place and the club will really try to make this happen also.”

Will Chelsea sell Maatsen?

Chelsea is embroiled in some PSR-related problems requiring them to bring in massive funds before a deadline ahead of the summer. They must find buyers for some of their stars, especially homegrown players like Conor Gallagher and Ian Maatsen,

Apart from Dortmund, Premier League clubs are chasing Maatsen. However, the Germans will have a good chance of securing the £35 million-rated prospect’s signature if they have the money to spend.
