Andriy Lunin set to sign new four-year contract with Real Madrid

Real Madrid and Andriy Lunin have reportedly reached the final phase of negotiations over a new contract, which will run until June 30, 2028.

According to a report by Guillermo Rai of The Athletic, Andriy Lunin will commit his future to Real Madrid. The two parties have advanced talks over a new deal, which should be official soon. The contract will run until June 30, 2028, with Los Blancos securing the services of the reinvigorated 25-year-old foreseeable future.

Andriy Lunin and his Real Madrid journey

Andriy Lunin had to bide his time before establishing a foothold in the first-team squad at Real Madrid. The Ukrainian international has been with Los Blancos for nearly half a dozen years but has only managed to secure regular game time at the Santiago Bernabeu this season.

It took a long-term injury to Thibaut Courtois and an untimely fitness issue for on-loan shot-stopper Kepa Arrizabalaga for Lunin to get his opportunity. But the 25-year-old grabbed it with both hands and has become the undisputed first-choice goalkeeper in the absence of Courtois.

The reinvigorated goalkeeper has turned out 29 times thus far across all competitions for Real Madrid this season, conceding 27 goals while keeping 12 clean sheets. However, Lunin’s long-term future at Real Madrid has been uncertain in the last few weeks due to his contract situation.

Will Lunin leave Real Madrid?

The Ukrainian international will enter the final 12 months of his Real Madrid contract when the summer transfer window opens. Such a situation has not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of several high-profile clubs across Europe, with recent reports linking Andriy Lunin with Manchester United. Meanwhile, the Merengues have been eager to tie him to a new deal.

Reports last month stated that the Merengues were confident of tying Lunin to a new contract at the Santiago Bernabeu. The confidence will turn into reality, with Guillermo Rai suggesting that the two parties are close to sealing an agreement over a deal that will run until June 30, 2028.

That will take Lunin to the completion of a decade at Real Madrid if he honours the new contract. As for Manchester United, they must look elsewhere for goalkeeper reinforcement heading into the summer transfer window.
