According to Fichajes, Atletico Madrid are considering selling Jose Maria Gimenez. The 29-year-old La Liga-winning defender is already attracting plenty of interest from top clubs. Barcelona is ready to gamble on the Uruguayan, with Manchester United and Chelsea also keen.
Jose Maria Gimenez is up for sale?
Atletico Madrid are are revered for its defensive style under Diego Simeone, and Jose Maria Gimenez has played a huge part in it over the years. The Uruguayan, however, has fallen out of favour this season, with the Argentine coach preferring his other options, even in critical games.
Atletico Madrid are pondering selling the 29-year-old La Liga-winning defender in the summer, as they believe he can still fetch a decent sum in the market. A host of clubs are already keen on the defender, with Barcelona being one of those, while Arsenal and Manchester United are also considered part of the race.
Gimenez packs plenty of experience from his many years with Atletico and will undoubtedly have the appeal to join any top side. At Atletico, he may have run his course, with Simeone desperate to bring in funds to fuel new transfers in the summer, including a replacement for the Uruguayan and fellow centre-back Mario Hermoso.
Gimenez still has a contract with Atletico until 2028, so if he cannot find the proper suitor, there may be a chance of staying here and fighting for a place. However, things look bleak for him here, as Atletico would prefer to sell him for a decent sum and move on from this long-lasting relationship.
Manchester United, Chelsea and Barcelona keen on Gimenez
Barcelona are probably the unlikely suitor here, considering how formidable their defensive setup seems. However, Manchester United is an exciting option for the 29-year-old La Liga-winning defender. The Red Devils are set to undergo a defensive revamp and need some experienced heads.
Chelsea are also looking at options to replace Thiago Silva, who might not renew with the club and could leave in the summer. Gimenez would make sense for their backline, which essentially needs more experience. Once the veteran Brazilian departs, Chelsea will have a big gap to fill.
