Newcastle United are reportedly monitoring the situation of 23-year-old Welsh defender Neco Williams at fellow Premier League club Nottingham Forest.

According to a report by Daily Mirror, Neco Williams is the subject of interest from Newcastle United. The Magpies are in the market for a midfielder heading into the summer transfer window, with the update suggesting the 23-year-old as a potential solution. However, the versatile Nottingham Forest defender has hardly ever played in the middle of the park.

Neco Williams and his Nottingham Forest tale

Neco Williams has established himself as an asset for Nottingham Forest since arriving from Liverpool in a deal worth around €20 million in July 2022. The Welsh international has been a regular at the back for the Premier League club in the last 18 months, with his versatility making him a top option for his manager.

The 23-year-old has turned out 30 times thus far for Nottingham Forest this season, chipping in with an assist. However, Williams’s long-term future at the City Ground is uncertain, with the Tricky Trees mired in the relegation battle heading into the final rounds of fixtures in the Premier League.

Relegation to the EFL Championship might compel Nottingham Forest to sanction a fire sale, with prospective suitors keeping an eye on the situation. Newcastle United will be on the clubs eyeing Nottingham Forest players, with Morgan Gibbs-White among their targets. But Williams also features on their radar.

Newcastle move on the cards?

Newcastle United’s interest in Neco Williams is intriguing. The Welshman is primarily a right-back, but the Magpies do not need a new signing in the position. With Valentino Livramento excelling this season and Kieran Trippier being the first-choice right-back, Newcastle United should focus on other positions.

However, Williams can be a solution for the left-back slot amid uncertainties surrounding the future of Matt Targett. However, the report has suggested that the 23-year-old might be an option for the midfield unit, with Gibbs-White being the top target to bolster the department.

The Magpies also have other targets for the midfield unit, with Emile Smith Rowe featuring on their radar. So, it will be interesting to see if a move for Williams sees the light of day amid Newcastle United’s eagerness to bolster the midfield department.
