Arsenal and Liverpool have reportedly fallen behind Manchester City in the race to sign Gustavo Nunes from Gremio.

According to a report by The Sun, Gustavo Nunes is gaining popularity in the market ahead of the summer transfer window. Arsenal, Liverpool, and Manchester City are vying for the 18-year-old Gremio winger, with the Premier League champions leading the race to sign the teenage sensation.

Who is Gustavo Nunes?

Gustavo Nunes is the latest Brazilian whizkid to rise in prominence in his homeland while capturing the attention of top European clubs. A native of Sao Vicente do Sul, the 18-year-old has taken age-group football in Brazil by storm while also breaking into the first-team squad at the club.

The 18-year-old made his first-team debut for Gremio in February and has managed 44 minutes for the senior side. Meanwhile, Nunes, fondly known as Gustavinho among fans, has amassed four goals and five assists in 17 appearances across all competitions. Nunes’s progress has not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of several high-profile clubs, including Arsenal, Liverpool, and Manchester City.

Premier League move on the cards?

Gabriel Martinelli’s success in the last few seasons has compelled Arsenal to scour the Brazilian market for prospects. The Gunners have signed Marquinhos while showing interest in Douglas Mendes in recent weeks. The highly-rated Gremio winger has now emerged as a target for Arsenal.

As for Liverpool, the Reds are in a precarious position over the long-term future of Mohamed Salah. So, they need to invest in a young attacker who can take over from the Egyptian attacker in the coming years. Recent reports have linked Liverpool with several wingers, including Crysencio Summerville. But Gustavo Nunes is also a viable target.

However, Arsenal and Liverpool have fallen behind Manchester City in the race to sign the 18-year-old Brazilian winger. The Premier League champions have scoured the South American market for highly-rated prospects, signing Julian Alvarez and Claudio Echeverri in recent years. Nunes has now emerged as a target for Manchester City.

With Manchester City leading the race to sign the Gremio wonderkid, Arsenal and Liverpool need to step up. It will be interesting to see if the 18-year-old becomes the latest South American prospect to arrive at the Etihad.
