Barcelona will soon open talks with 18-cap Spanish international Pedri over a new deal, with the Blaugrana preparing the contract.

According to reputed Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, Pedri will soon receive a new contract from Barcelona. The reigning La Liga champions want to tie the 21-year-old midfield prospect to a new contract. Talks between the two parties will soon begin, with an agreement expected in the coming months.

Pedri and his journey at Barcelona

Pedro Gonzalez Lopez, better known as Pedri, has been among the best performers for Barcelona since arriving from UD Las Palmas in 2020. A native of Tegueste, the Spaniard graduated from the UD Las Palmas youth division before breaking into the club’s first-team squad as a 16-year-old.

Barcelona secured Pedri’s services in September 2019 but loaned him back to Las Palmas for the 2019/20 season. Since returning to Barcelona, the young midfielder has set the stage alight, consistently setting the stage alight in the middle of the park. However, since an excellent debut campaign with the Blaugrana, the 21-year-old has struggled with fitness issues.

Playing almost every game in the 2020/21 season before representing Spain in the UEFA Euro 2020 seemingly burned him out. The 18-cap Spanish international has struggled to last an entire campaign without spending time on the sidelines. However, that has not happened this term, with the youngster managing only 1,584 minutes of game time in 25 outings.

What does the future have in store?

However, Pedri’s stock remains high, with recent reports linking him with high-profile Premier League clubs like Arsenal and Manchester City. But Barcelona will unlikely entertain any offers for the 21-year-old Spaniard, with Fabrizio Romano claiming a new contract is on the cards for him.

The latest update contradicts recent reports, which claimed that Barcelona might look to cash in on Pedri. The reigning La Liga champions are reportedly preparing a new contract for the 18-cap Spanish international, with talks between the parties set to open soon.

Barcelona’s decision to consider handing a new contract to the youngster is understandable. Despite Pedri’s recent fitness issues, he remains a world-class performer, as he illustrated with an assist off the bench against Paris Saint-Germain earlier this week. So, we might see the Spaniard signing a new contract with Barcelona in the coming months.
