Liverpool and Manchester City have received a major blow in their pursuit of Florian Wirtz, who is set to stay at Bayer Leverkusen.
According to a report by HITC, Florian Wirtz is expected to continue at Bayer Leverkusen beyond the summer. The 20-year-old attacking midfielder is on the wishlist of multiple top clubs, including Liverpool and Manchester City. But they might not be able to sign him in the upcoming summer transfer window.
Wirtz’s time at Bayer Leverkusen
Florian Wirtz joined Bayer Leverkusen in the winter of 2020 from FC Koln. In just six months, he went from their Under-19 setup to the first team and has since gone from strength to strength. While an injury kept him out of the FIFA World Cup in Qatar, the 20-year-old has bounced back in some fashion and has been doing wonders for the German club.
In the ongoing season, he has featured in 37 matches across competitions and has contributed towards 28 goals. The attacking midfielder has 17 assists and 11 goals to his name. He has played a pivotal role in their dominance this term, and his performances have put him on the radar of Manchester City and Liverpool.
Manchester City, Liverpool receive blow in Florian Wirtz chase
Liverpool and Manchester City are always on the lookout for players who can help further bolster their attack, and they feel Wirtz is a special player who could do wonders for them in the long run. City are looking at him as a long-term replacement for Kevin De Bruyne.
Meanwhile, Liverpool need a few more signings in the centre of the park despite having undergone a major overhaul last summer. They feel an attacking midfielder like Wirtz could help them maintain their levels.
While both teams were ready to compete for his signatures, they are unlikely to taste any success this summer. The 20-year-old is expected to continue at the German club for at least another season and Xabi Alonso’s decision to continue at Bayer Leverkusen could have played a huge role in that.
Alonso was linked with the Liverpool job but has committed his future to the German club. His team are all set to win the Bundesliga this season, and they are looking to build on it next season. On the back of the Spanish manager’s decision, Wirtz is all set to continue at Leverkusen for another season.
