Outgoing Serie A champions Napoli will reportedly look to sign experienced Spanish midfielder Oriol Romeu from Barcelona in the summer transfer window.
According to a report by Spanish outlet Fichajes, Oriol Romeu is the subject of interest from Napoli. The Serie A giants are in the market for a midfielder heading into the summer transfer window. And they will look to sign the experienced Spanish midfielder from Barcelona.
Oriol Romeu and his Barcelona Travails
Oriol Romeu has hit a brick wall since rejoining Barcelona from Girona last summer. A well-travelled veteran, the Spaniard spent his peak years in England, representing Southampton while briefly turning out for Chelsea. He returned to Spain in 2022, joining Girona from the Saints.
The move paid off handsomely, with Romeu establishing himself as one of the best midfielders in La Liga in the 2022/23 season. The experienced midfielder’s exploits with Girona helped him earn a move back to Barcelona, with the Blaugrana signing him as a short-term replacement for Sergio Busquets. But the 31-year-old has struggled to stamp his authority at the Catalan club.
While Romeu started the 2023/24 campaign as one of the first-choice midfielders for Barcelona, his stock has plummeted in the last few months. So, the Spanish midfielder has not even managed 1,300 minutes of game time despite playing 31 times this season. Hence, his Barcelona future is uncertain, with the situation capturing the attention of Serie A champions Napoli.
Serie A Move on the Cards?
Napoli will delve into the market for a midfielder in the summer transfer window. The Partenopei will part ways with Piotr Zielinski in the coming months, with the Polish international set to join Inter Milan in a Bosman move. In addition, Leander Dendoncker has struggled to make his mark at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium.
