Chelsea were reportedly keen on signing Uruguayan striker Darwin Nunez from Liverpool in the summer transfer window.

According to a report from The Times, Chelsea made an enquiry to sign 24-year-old Uruguayan striker Darwin Nunez. But Liverpool knocked back the approach in the summer transfer window.

Liverpool signed Nunez for £85 million in the summer transfer window of 2022, and he has been outstanding for them this season. The South American striker has scored 13 goals and picked up 11 assists across all competitions.

His ability to slot into the centre forward role as well as that of a wide forward makes him an invaluable asset for Liverpool. Although Nunez has hit the woodwork nine times in the league this season, his performances have been largely impressive, and he is likely to improve further with coaching and experience.

The 24-year-old striker has all the tools to develop into a world-class player. So, it is no surprise that Liverpool want to keep him at the club for the long term. The Reds spent a premium for him when they signed him from Benfica, and they will hope that the striker can achieve his potential at the Premier League club.

If he manages to develop into a world class striker with Liverpool, he should be able to justify the investment. Meanwhile, Chelsea need to improve their attacking options. They signed Nicolas Jackson last summer, but he has been quite underwhelming since the move. Chelsea need somebody better to lead the line for them, and they have been linked with players like Victor Osimhen.

Chelsea must sign a striker in summer

Signing a quality striker should be a top priority for Chelsea at the end of the season, and it will be interesting to see who they end up with. The Blues have had a disappointing season so far, and they need quality players to bounce back strongly and secure Champions League qualification once again.

There is no doubt that Darwin Nunez would have been a quality acquisition for them. But a move for him is highly unlikely in the near future. Meanwhile, the striker will look to prove himself with Liverpool as well. The Reds have a far more ambitious project compared to Chelsea, and he will not want to quit them for the Blues anytime soon.
