Newcastle United will reportedly compete with 22-year-old Manchester United academy graduate James Garner this summer.

According to a report by Football Insider, James Garner is the subject of interest from Newcastle United. The 22-year-old midfielder is also a target for Tottenham Hotspur. The two Premier League clubs are keeping tabs on the progress of the Manchester United academy graduate at Everton.

The James Garner Story

James Garner is one of the best young prospects to emerge from the fabled Manchester United youth division. The Englishman spent his formative years with the Red Devils before breaking into the first-team squad a few years ago. But with regular game time eluding him, he joined Everton in September 2022 after two loan spells away from Manchester United.

The 22-year-old has grown in stature since joining Everton, gradually becoming a mainstay in the middle of the park. He has turned out 31 times thus far this season, chipping in with two goals and one assist. Meanwhile, Garner’s progress has not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of several high-profile clubs.

A Man in Demand

Reports this month have revealed that the former Manchester United academy ace has emerged as a target for Tottenham Hotspur. The North London giants view him as an alternative to Conor Gallagher. But Tottenham will face stiff competition from Newcastle United for Garner.

Newcastle United’s interest in James Garner makes sense. The Magpies are in the market for a midfielder as they look to add to the quality in the middle of the park. In addition, Joelinton and Bruno Guimaraes face an uncertain future at St. James’ Park, with Paris Saint-Germain interested in the Newcastle United duo. With the former likely to leave, Garner has emerged as a viable target.

As for Tottenham, the North London club will likely part ways with Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg in the summer transfer window. In addition, Giovani Lo Celso faces an uncertain future at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. So, it behoves them to sign a midfielder, with the ex-Manchester United academy ace being an option worth considering.

Garner will become a hot property if Everton cannot stave off the relegation threat this season. Even otherwise, the 22-year-old is an appealing prospect, considering his age and growing stature in the Premier League.
