La Liga champions Barcelona are reportedly mulling over a surprise move for 33-year-old Spanish goalkeeper David de Gea.

According to a report by Spanish outlet Fichajes, David de Gea is the subject of interest from Barcelona. The 33-year-old wants to play for a club in La Liga before he hangs up his boots. And the reigning Spanish champions are ready to hand a contract to the Manchester United icon.

David de Gea and his Legendary Manchester United Spell

David de Gea is a graduate of the Atletico Madrid youth division and rose in prominence at the Spanish club. But his stock skyrocketed during his 12-year stint with Manchester United. The Red Devils shelled out a considerable sum of €25 million to land the Spaniard in July 2011. And he repaid Sir Alex Ferguson’s faith with numerous match-winning performances.

The 33-year-old won eight trophies with Manchester United, turning out nearly 550 times for the club while keeping 190 clean sheets. He also won multiple Player of the Year awards at Manchester United while earning a place in the PFA Premier League Team of the Year five times.

The Spanish goalkeeper also won the Premier League Golden Glove twice, including last term. But David de Gea saw his Manchester United stint ending in shocking circumstances as the Red Devils rescinded the contract offer on his table before he left as a free agent. Manchester United eventually replaced him with Andre Onana, who has blown hot and cold this term.

What Next?

Meanwhile, widespread reports have linked de Gea with several high-profile clubs, including Newcastle United. In addition, Saudi Pro League outfits are keen on signing the Manchester United icon. But the Spaniard reportedly has his heart set on moving to La Liga. That dream might come true, with Barcelona interested in him.

Barcelona’s interest in David de Gea is surprising, considering Marc-Andre ter Stegen is the undisputed first-choice goalkeeper. In addition, Inaki Pena has been a solid deputy to the German international.

So, it is hard to see how de Gea fits into the scheme of things at the Catalan club. Nonetheless, Barcelona will reportedly compete with Sevilla and Real Betis for the 33-year-old Manchester United icon. So, it will be interesting to see if he gets his desired move to La Liga in the coming months.
