Newcastle United have been handed a huge blow in their pursuit of former Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea.
According to a report by The Sun, David de Gea has made a big decision regarding his future as he looks to return to footballing action. The Spanish international has been in exile since parting ways with Manchester United last summer. Newcastle United are one of the clubs keen on having him in their ranks but they seem to have received a blow in their pursuit.
De Gea ended his 12-year-long stint at Manchester United last summer. While there were reports of him extending his stay at the club, the two parties couldn’t reach an agreement and he left after his contract ran out.
Since leaving the Manchester-based club, the 33-year-old shot-stopper has been linked with multiple top clubs from across the world. Clubs from the Premier League as well as the Saudi Pro League would love to have the Spanish international in their ranks.
Magpies’ interest in former United number one
Newcastle United are one of the big clubs that have been linked with the former United number one. Nick Pope’s injury came as a huge blow to Eddie Howe’s team and the idea of signing De Gea to add depth to their ranks has been considered ever since.
The Magpies wanted to give Martin Dubravka an opportunity to prove himself but unfortunately, he has failed to impress Howe. As a result, they are once again considering the idea of making a move for the 33-year-old.
De Gea’s desire to continue in Spain
But, Newcastle are unlikely to get their hands on the Spanish international. Despite interest from clubs in England and big-money contract offers from the Middle East, De Gea wants to stay in Spain during the final years of his career.
He is waiting for clubs in Spain to make a move for him. There could be a possibility of him rejoining his childhood club Atletico Madrid. He could even move to rivals Real Madrid as a cover and then try to work his way into the XI. De Gea is a free agent at this stage and he could join any club outside the transfer window.
