Newcastle United are interested in acquiring the services of David De Gea as a replacement for the injured Nick Pope.

According to a report by DailyMail, Newcastle United could make a surprise move for the services of David De Gea. The former Manchester United shot-stopper is currently a free agent and they could sign him as a replacement for injured star Nick Pope.

The Magpies have received a major setback as their number one was forced off in their 1-0 win over Manchester United. He has suffered a shoulder injury and could be out for a lengthy period of time. The results of the scans are yet to arrive but an operation is currently considered the most likely course of action and he could be out for four months.

The 31-year-old has been one of the mainstays of the team since arriving at the club for a fee of just £10 million from Burnley in the summer of 2022. He has done wonders for Eddie Howe’s team and with the possibility of him being out for a long time, the Magpies have started looking at potential options.

Newcastle do have Martin Dubravka and Loris Karius in their ranks but they are still looking for someone who can be as efficient as Pope in goal. Meanwhile, David De Gea is one of their targets. The 33-year-old was Manchester United’s number one until last season.

But, he parted ways with the club last summer after 12 long years at the club. Reports hinted toward a new deal for De Gea, but in the end, his contract ran out. The Spanish international is yet to join a club and he is available for free.

He has a lot of experience and has proved himself in the Premier League for over a decade. The 33-year-old still has a lot left in him and he can certainly help the Magpies cope with the absence of Nick Pope.

However, a deal might not be that easy despite him being available for free. The former United shot-stopper was on £375,000-per-week during his final contract and he would have to take a massive pay cut to fit into the Magpies’ wage structure.
